When Fear Makes It Hard to Trust People
Have you ever noticed how quickly your brain can turn something you don't know into something you're afraid might be true? Someone doesn't reply to your message. And at first, you don't think much of it. But then you remember something they said yesterday. Something about their tone that felt a little off. And now you're reading the message you sent again. Did I say something wrong? Are they upset with me? What if they know something I don't? You put your phone down, but you're still thinking about it. There's that tight feeling in your stomach. Your shoulders have crept up toward your ears. And you keep reaching for your phone, hoping there's a reply that will finally let you relax. The worst part is that you know you might be making something out of nothing. But what if you're not? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴? I think that's where it gets difficult. Because sometimes we've been right. Sometimes the person we trusted really was hiding something. Sometimes the little things we noticed turned out to matter. And once you've experienced that, there's a part of you that never wants to be caught unaware again. So you start paying closer attention. You remember conversations. Notice changes in people's behaviour. Try to work out what they really mean. And it can feel like you're being wise. Until you realise how much of your day you've spent trying to protect yourself from something you don't even know is happening. I've been thinking about how much fear can influence what we're willing to believe about other people. Because there's something quite painful about wanting to trust someone and feeling unable to. You want to believe they're being honest. You want to receive their kindness without questioning what they want from you. You want to stop searching for the thing that might prove you were foolish to trust them. But there's that little voice... What if I get it wrong again? And underneath that, perhaps something even harder to admit.
When Fear Makes It Hard to Trust People

What stands out to me is the fear of looking back and feeling foolish for having trusted someone. That can make every new uncertainty feel like a test of our judgement. I think part of rebuilding self-trust is recognising that having believed someone who later disappointed us does not make us foolish, and that we can learn from an experience without having to keep ourselves on guard against every possibility.

Dr Veronika Hübner - Uncovering self-sabotaging behaviours
In my experience, the answers to what resists (or sabotages) our growth often come from what we don’t yet know and from the people we least expect to offer those insights. This is why I always say, "Try everything and stop listening to your ego, which believes it knows everything, but does not!" In this interview, I would like to introduce you to Dr Veronika Hübner, who is helping me write a book about "The Calmness in Mind Process", a topic many of you have requested for years. Dr Hübner possesses a remarkable ability to help individuals uncover their beliefs, narratives, and self-sabotaging behaviours, even when these issues stem from unconscious sources or are deeply ingrained from childhood experiences. She encourages a deep exploration within oneself, prompting profound self-reflection. Although she holds you accountable, she does so in a safe and supportive manner. I have never encountered anyone with such skill in this area. She also explores how people make sense of their experiences and how these meanings shape their self-image, relationships and sense of what is possible. She helps them understand where their beliefs come from, what these beliefs once helped them cope with, and whether they still fit their lives today. Her academic background in theology also informs her work with faith and belief. She can explore religious and spiritual questions across the full spectrum of belief without imposing her own outlook. Dr Hübner tailors her approach to each person and their particular circumstances. She works with language to uncover assumptions and internal rules, creative expression to explore experiences that may be difficult to put into words, and body awareness and kinesiological techniques to reach aspects of a person’s experience that conscious reflection alone may not reveal. Through this work, she helps people recognise resources and abilities they may have learned to overlook. Her own experience of feeling unseen became part of the fine perception she now brings to her work. This personal connection reflects her guiding idea, “From Wound to Impact”: what has marked a person’s life can become a source of strength and distinction, shaping what they bring to the world and how they relate to others.

Thank you, @John Glanvill, for putting this into words so thoughtfully. What I keep coming back to in this work is that a response which now holds us back may once have been essential to getting through something difficult. When we begin to understand what that response was trying to protect, we can approach it with a different kind of understanding. This often changes how we relate to ourselves and what becomes possible from there.

𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝑬𝒎𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒅, 𝑪𝒐𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 — 𝑨 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔 A client may understand a great deal about themselves and still struggle to move forward. They may understand where their difficulties come from and still repeat the same patterns. Insight does not always translate into change. Underlying this can be 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. The stories, narratives and language through which people interpret their experience also shape these structures, influencing how they understand themselves, what they perceive and what they believe is possible. They can be recognised, questioned and changed. My focus is 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐞, 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲, 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟, 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. I help people bring 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐨, so that insight can become embodied and translated into action. This can support people to act in accordance with what they have come to recognise, rather than leaving insight at the level of intellectual understanding. It can support greater inner stability, a clearer sense of direction and discernment, while allowing previously disconnected aspects of experience to be re-integrated towards wholeness. This includes 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: words shape how experience is understood and given meaning, images and visual expression can make inner experience accessible, and the body, explored through kinesiological tests and techniques, reveals another dimension of that experience, with each influencing how the others are understood and experienced. It has grown from more than 20 years of experience in learning and personal development, as well as my own lived experience of moving from suffering towards sovereignty. I bring these perspectives together according to what each person needs, including where relevant questions of spirituality, faith, existential meaning, family or religious conditioning and openness to not-knowing.
