My intro
I’m Doug. 45. I always respected the stoic philosophy but never really understood it. I’ve started looking at some quotes by Marcus Aurelius and they’ve really been making an impression on me. My main motivation to join this group was to try and use the stoic philosophy to instill me the discipline I need for my current endeavors. I wish to get physically fit, which requires dedication, and I’m learning the skills necessary to start a new business, which requires tremendous amounts of focus and perseverance. I don’t know if this group demands a tremendous amount of my attention, which if so, will be a little hard for me to give as I need to focus on my business, but I will routinely check in. I look forward to gaining the strength and encouragement I need for my goals, and of course, sharing it with others when I can.

@Cody Giroux thanks, Cody. I looked at the classroom at the first part, “What is stoicism?”, and I liked where it said that a stoic feels the same emotions as everyone else but doesn’t allow them to dictate his actions. I believe that’s a fundamental difference between perceived stoicism and the actual stoic philosophy, to acknowledge our emotions but not let them have too much power over us, especially if it can affect the integrity of our chosen direction.

@Tristan Van der Wereld thank you, Tristan. I appreciated your post about the 80/20 rule. I will definitely try to apply that rule myself in my situations. It reminded me of the Marcus Aurelius quote about how most of what we say and do is not essential and to ask ourselves at every moment, “Is this necessary?”

Hi there. In the last few years I’ve taken an interest in spending a lot of time overseas. But how when I’m too young to retire? That’s why I’m here.
