In 1832 Delacroix travelled to Morocco and filled small notebooks with whatever was in front of him. Quick ink drawings, a wash of colour, and notes to himself squeezed into the gaps. A wall painted yellow. A dress in a very bright pink. Half a figure, three lines and done. None of it is finished. It was never meant to be. He was collecting. Years later he wrote: "I began to make something tolerable of my African journey only when I had forgotten the trivial details and remembered nothing but the striking and the poetic side of the subject. Having heard about the "value of repetition" I decided to sketch the beginning, middle and end steps while enjoying zucchini bread and coffee. I noticed how hard it felt to sketch a simple arrangement of circular objects. I also felt it get easier and observed the exact moment when I began actually looking at the objects I was drawing. I noted an obvious improvement in the result as I continued along, modifying lines and shapes to redraw the marks that were present. I also feel a soft spot in myself where I kinda like the "wonky" first attempt. Something about "wonky" and imperfect just feels so honest.

Non-dominant hand scribbles with black marker in altered book indicate a feeling of scattered energy, lack of focus on personal goals. Spent the day taking care of a precious, busy 3 year old, tending to her needs and whims. During a visit to the library shared a simple paper craft with her, finding it easy to color in the lines without over-analyzing. Feeling a bit empty in the gut, or a black hole. Easy does it. Keep showing up. It still counts.
