Third Prize: Michele Ashby Get A Dog They Said “This portrait, Get a Dog They Said, came from a day when the wind was strong and the rain constant. By mid-afternoon I still hadn’t left the house but decided enough was enough and we – Bobby, my old labradoodle, and I – would just have to brave it. We didn’t get far before we were completely drenched, which is when I found out my coat wasn’t waterproof and I could feel rain dripping down my back soaking everything I was wearing. I took a photo to show my husband, Paul. Later, when I was browsing photos on my phone for inspiration, this one kept coming back. I am selective about the competitions I enter. I think it’s important to concentrate my efforts on a shorter list rather than spread myself too thin. It feels amazing to have won third prize in The British Art Prize, a validation for the many hours spent in the studio. I was lucky enough to be one of the 50 artists selected two years ago, with a still life called Size Isn’t Everything, so to reach a further goal now is the icing on the cake. I’m very proud of this piece. To know it resonated with the judges and will hopefully put a smile on the faces of those who see it, makes all the wet dog walks bearable.”

Reeva here. I would like this document removed and shredded before my hooman reads it. She already feeds me less than that little squirt Kailo who is a quarter of my size! As for treats; she has the art of making me perfom like a trick pony then trying to give me the tiniest treat which she makes even smaller! Sometimes I wonder if I need glasses but it's just as well I have a nose that can find a biscuit crumb in a 5 acre field!
