What’s Considered Negative on a Credit Report?
Late Payments - Payments made 30, 60, 90+ days late - One of the biggest score impacts - More recent = more damage Collections - Debts sent to collection agencies - Very damaging, especially unpaid - Paying doesn’t always remove them Charge-Offs - Accounts the lender stopped trying to collect on - Still owed and still harmful - Often followed by collections High Credit Card Balances - Using too much of your available credit - Over 30% utilization can lower scores - Even if you pay on time Hard Inquiries - Applying for new credit - Too many in a short time can hurt Public Records - Bankruptcies - Judgments (where still reported) - Tax liens (rare now but possible) Closed or Inactive Accounts - Closing old accounts can lower credit age - Can impact score if done incorrectly Incorrect or Outdated Information - Wrong balances - Accounts that aren’t yours - Items reporting past legal time limits

Credit Tip
Your credit isn’t about perfection, it’s about patterns. Lenders look at how often you pay on time, how much of your credit you use, and how responsibly you manage what you have. Late payments, high balances, and collections can lower your score, but consistency can rebuild it. Paying on time, keeping balances low, and reviewing your credit report for accuracy all make a real difference over time. Credit improvement is a process, not a quick fix and small changes add up.
