Welcome!
Welcome to Nami ryu Kenjutsu online. I'm excited to have you here, and to share your passion for learning Japanese swordsmanship. ⚔️ Please take a minute to introduce yourself and share what motivates you to learn kenjutsu. Maybe you're into Kurosawa movies, the samurai, or Japanese swords, or maybe you've wanted to learn Japanese swordsmanship but don't have a place to train or a community to support you. We'd like to know what brought you here!

Hey everyone! I'm David, I live in Arkansas and work as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I've done Martial arts since I was 5 because I wanted to be a ninja turtle. From there I got into a lot of anime that got me interested in swordsmanship specifically. I discovered James Williams when I was in high school and have wanted to train in Nami Ryu ever since. I recently had my first child so I haven't been able to attend the live classes in a while but I'm very excited about having this as a means to stay connected, motivated, and on task!

@Jacob Bear gotta be Leonardo man. I love his dedication to training.
What do you look for in your sword?
Howdy all, I've held a friend's polypropylene katana, about a year ago. He's a beginner, but he's huge, so I was surprised at how small the sword was. I'm not beginning kendo anytime soon—I've just dipped my toe into swords at all, and I'm a curious fella. I have a 29"-blade training dao, the one in my profile photo, that I call the butter knife, and a Chinese straight sword that's intentionally a bit oversized for me, with a 37" blade and space for both hands on the handle. Do you have a rule of thumb, a principle, or a good resource for sizing a katana? I know, you match the tool to the job, and for a beginner, the job is training. Even still, I'd love to hear how you select a sword when you can choose based on feel. Much obliged 🖖

I'm a fan of larger swords personally. My first quality katana was a raptor Shobu Zukuri, and I really like it a lot. The one thing I don't like about it though is how big the tsuka is. They are really thick and beefy tsuka on those raptor katana. I subsequently bought an old Bugei Wave second hand, and I adore that sword. It's bigger than the raptor but feels so good. Very well balanced, but you're paying for it. I then ended up ordering a custom katana from sinosword to similar specs to my Bugei. It cost a fraction of the price, maybe around $600-ish. Good sword, I use it for practice a lot. The balance and handling isn't as good as the Bugei. I notice the difference when I've been training with it for a while then pick up the Bugei, the sinosword just doesn't feel as alive. Fittings and furniture also aren't as good on the sinosword. But both are sharp! They will get the job done! I can post pics of these 3 together to compare if you'd like. I also use a Bugei Bokken too, but I'm not sure if they are still making those.
Videos and Content Coming Soon!
I began recording videos ever since COVID had us all staying home, and I wanted to give my students a way to keep training and stay connected. I've recorded hundreds of videos since then and I'm recording new content weekly for this community. This art is my passion and my goal is to make kenjutsu, and all the benefits of training, accessible to anyone in the world who wants to learn. As we're getting started, I'll be posting a lot of free resources. For anyone wanting to take their kenjutsu training to the next level with dedicated training over Zoom, that will also be coming soon! If you have any particular video topics in mind, please message me or comment below.
