What are you working on this week?
Taking inspiration from @Jon Dawson's post about what we're working towards for the week with some of his prior reflective prompts: 1) What am I working on this week? 2) What action will I take? 3) What is holding me back? 1. What I'm working on? Practicing reading/presenting final scripts aloud for mindful self-leadership course. 2. What actions will I take? There's 10-modules (about 4,000 words per module) in the course, so I'm breaking it up into 2-3 modules per day for practice. 3. What is holding me back? I've had some hesitation around continuing to edit or refine parts of the scripts for continuity and flow, where I start to question my credibility in the information and delivery of the content. Feeling like I could add more or go deeper. I had a supportive coaching session with @Reko Vitae last week that has helped me ground in authentic energy. We quickly got to a theme thru a limiting context/belief I hold ("I have to show my value/worth in order to connect with other people") and created a short mantra that has stayed with me across social and professional settings ("Standing in my ancient wisdom"). Holding that in my awareness, I've maintained connection to my intuition to know what feels true to me in moments of hesitation, whether it's with work/writing or social interactions. Curious if there's anything you all are working towards this week? Cheers

1. I am working on the 1st official rendition of my project to post to the group. 2. I will have it posted tomorrow night. 3. Time restrictions, but I finally got over the mental hurtle I haven't been able to clear since October and have something started I feel good about, so there's less time needed now to complete.
celebrating vs rewarding
I have been reflecting on the discussion we had last night and have come to the conclusion that I am not actually good at celebrating my actions and accomplishments. I am good at rewarding myself. I tend to operate from a lens of I did A I get B. Although this may help by reward seeking, it often seems empty of the feeling of rejoicing that celebrating suggests. This all feels like progress, as I have historically relied heavily on negative self-talk to spur action. Reward is at least neutral to somewhat positive (depending on the reward), but there is still room for growth. What does it mean to celebrate? what feeling or thoughts does it conjure?

Wow this is quite a profound insight Jon. I had not realized the distinction until I read this, and I resonated immediately with it. Rewards seem almost like a bad habit if they're devoid of the intentionality of celebration for achieving something specific, as opposed to justifying something enjoyable because X has been hard.
Holding a Vision
Sharing my latest IG post here: Ive worked with men for the past 10 years and the single most common reason men seek the help of others is: Lack of VISION Many men think having a vision will somehow transform their lives, give them purpose, give them clarity and relief from the confusion of their current existence. But the truth is that a vision requires the first steps be take into the total dark. When you read a book, you don't know what it will say, what answers it will give you, and what doors it will open. When you venture out into the world, you dont know what will come of it. The fact that life is full of the unknown is terrifying. But a vision doesn't change that. The vision you seek comes when you have spent long enough in the unknown and allowed the noise to settle. The vision becomes clear as you learn that it isn't going to solve anything. I see men spin their wheels for years, haunted by the idea they have of a perfect life. This impossible idea remains forever over the horizon. Life is not a destination that you one day arrive at. There is a reason vision quests are often done in the dark, fasting for days, alone. When the illusions of the senses quiet for long enough, then clarity is able to enter. Actions are often small, but if they are purposeful then they are also meaningful. Don't rush into action in order to distract from the unknown. Be with the unknown so you can know when, and how, to act.

This speaks deeply to me Reko. I recognize an affirmation to sit in the unknown, resisting the temptation to imagine an overly detailed path ahead, but also the challenge to take a step forward into it regardless. A common theme on the past few episodes of my philosophy podcast has been the age old distinction between 'being' and 'becoming". For centuries it was argued that being precedes becoming; that we have a transcendent cosmic identity and that our task is to discover it through living this life of immenance. But thinkers started challenging that in the last hundred years, suggesting a more eastern perspective that consciousness is less like a tree; a symbol of stability with clearly defined purpose, and more like a rhizome; a complex and resilient web of interconnected pathways of flow and purpose in every direction . A quote: "We shouldn’t engage in living life with the expectation that there’s some way we should be living that we’re going to arrive at some day. See, because again, the world is fundamentally a world in motion, constantly emerging or becoming or in flux. But this picture of the world that [Gilles Deleuze] is painting goes far beyond just metaphysics. This entire worldview is, in many ways, a call to action, a gauntlet being thrown down challenging anyone who hears it to rip off the shackles of a rigid identity that’s been given to you by somebody else and to engage in a process of becoming, to allow your identity to emerge immanently from inside of you rather than accepting it as a gift from someone else. But it goes beyond just you. His work is a call to embrace seeing the entire world in terms of difference rather than identity. Because if the world is fundamentally immanent and in motion and rhizomatic, then to embrace that immanence and motion and the enormous fractal complexity and inter-connectedness of the rhizome is to affirm existence, to Deleuze, rather than negate existence, which would be to hide behind identities and hierarchical systems of thought that just oversimplify things. To affirm existence is to embrace difference, to seek out different people, different cultures, different ideas, different answers to the question “How might a person live?” which could include different jobs, different relationships, different lifestyles, to spend your time engaging in different activities. Maybe this year it’s the trumpet; maybe next year it’s archery." - Steven West, ep. #129
How We Hold the Flame of Support
You may have noticed that how me meet each man in the calls varies. Some we dig deeper, and others we simply meet them where they are. Our stance on Mens Work and coaching is that accountability isnt about "should". We dont want anything for you. We are commited to supporting you to create what you want by providing inquiry and feedback around whats missing, or whats in the way. If you want a higher flame, the way to do that is to put yourself in the space, post your updates, what youre noticing, and what you are stuck on. There is no pressure to want a higher gradient, only the opportunity to get more for yourself.

This is great clarity on what the group is, and also what it isn't. When I was meeting with a councilor at the end of last winter, there were several sessions that I left feeling jaded. I would create a story that I wasn't getting my money's worth because I hadn't left with a breakthrough. But deep within I knew it was because I went in unclear about what I was looking for. When asked directly my answers were vague and usually focused on what I didn't want. And I still feel that way, especially this time of year.
