Academy Has the Pit Barrel PBX Cooker Listed for $199.99 ($400 off the regular price)
I became aware of this listing and thought I'd pass it on. I have never been to or even seen an Academy store (I don't think they are prominent where I live in CA), but I have heard others mention it. Not sure how long this price is good for but Pit Barrel Cooker lists the regular price for the PBX, which is their larger 22.5" cooker, for $599.99 so this is a massive discount off the regular price. If you've been on the fence about getting an easy to use drum smoker, this might be a great deal to jump on especially considering that the PBX is considerably larger than their standard 18.5" cooker. Please share & comment if you decide to buy it. https://www.academy.com/p/pit-barrel-cooker-pbx-smoker?gmc_feed=t&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=SEM-Shopping&utm_campaign=Non-Brand%7CPerformanceMax%7CSportsRec%7CeCom&utm_content=Shopping&ogmap=SEM%7CPLN%7CGOOG%7CSHOP%7Cc%7CFW%7C%7CNon-Brand-PerformanceMax-SportsRec-eCom%7C%7C22546966449&activationcode=SEM00000000008&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22553350043&gbraid=0AAAAADv-p96XPWpK-TEg8fXYKn2AiGpov&gclid=Cj0KCQjwzqXQBhD2ARIsAKrIeU8sBlayDt8GvjkafL7gbS2OWQ2pQh-m1Q9S8kkvAZ50NeGQ2c3zd9EaAsIpEALw_wcB

Military and First Responder takes an additional 10%off. Total is $179.99 before tax and in-store pickup. This is a great deal for those that are looking to add a different way of cooking to your bbq arsenal. Think of it like another tool in your outdoor kitchen. This is a great way to cook your ribs, sausage, and even fish by hanging them to smoke low and slow. For whole fish, maybe consider a cold smoke. I’m considering taking the ride 2 hours from me to get one for that Just Because feeling.
Burgers: flat-top or grill?

I have been thinking about 3 different LSG’s to add to my arsenal here for a while. So I am a bit envious of your cooker and the thought of you asking about a flat top. Stick with what your cooker is built for. Charcoal and wood on those burgers! And for your curiosity of the 3 LSG’s: Large Insulated Cabinet Double Door Offset Cabinet Cabinet Pellet Smoker.

@Eric Smiling That’s a really nice cooker.
St. Louis Ribs: How to Trim, Season, and Get Them Ready to Cook 🔥
This is the full prep walkthrough. I'm covering: - What actually makes a rib "St. Louis" vs. a regular spare rib - Why Costco's trim job saves me a ton of time - My silver skin shortcut (no peeling required) - And the big one — going salt and pepper only after what we discovered in the direct heat ribs video Salt first, let it pull moisture, then come back with pepper. That's the move. Watch it here → https://youtu.be/yy7nNHAcOZM Now I want to hear from you all: 👉 Are you still running commercial rubs on your ribs, or have you gone simple? 👉 What's the one thing you've changed about your rib prep recently that made the biggest difference? Drop a comment below — let's talk it out. – Backyard SmokeMaster BBQ

Meal Prep
I want to try prepping multiple weekdays worth of meats over the weekend. Has anyone done this successfully? Any tips?

Yes. Get yourself one of these or a food saver. By removing the room air from your foods, you will extend the life span of your meals. To heat it up it’s simply open the bag to reheat, or if you have the thick vacuum pack bags, then you can do a boil in the bag to reheat.

@Eric Smiling I typically won’t go longer than a week, but sealed up the upper limit is 10-14 days. If you trust the seal and the temp in your fridge, 1.5 weeks seems reasonable.
This Week's Podcast Will Go Live on Tuesday, May 12 at 6pm PST
Society fam — Episode 108 is moving up one day this week. We're going live TUESDAY, MAY 12 at 6PM PST (one day earlier than usual). This one's been building from conversations a lot of you have been having in here — the coconut briquette question, the "is Kingsford actually bad" question, the "what should I buy at Home Depot this Memorial Day" question. Title: The Charcoal Lie — What to Buy (and Avoid) This Memorial Day. What we're covering: - The four real charcoal categories (most folks only know two) - What's actually inside Kingsford in 2026 (not the 1985 version) - Why natural/hardwood briquettes are the most underrated category in BBQ - The lump variation problem and which brands actually deliver - The coconut wildcard — full segment on what it does, where it shines, where it doesn't - Matching the fuel to your cooker (kamado, kettle, drum, offset, direct heat) - A buying framework you can take to the hardware store this weekend Drop your Memorial Day cook plan in the comments — I'd love to hear what y'all are putting on the cookers. See you Tuesday. 🔗 The Charcoal Lie - What To Buy (And Avoid) This Memorial Day
