🇨🇳 The AI Race Just Got More Interesting
Two Chinese AI companies released frontier models last week that they say can compete with the best from OpenAI and Anthropic. And they're giving them away for free. Moonshot launched Kimi K3 ... a massive model with 2.8 trillion parameters. They say it only trails OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5. Alibaba followed with Qwen3.8 Max at 2.4 trillion parameters, claiming it's second only to Claude Fable 5. Here's what makes this different from the usual AI announcements. Both companies are making these models fully open-source. That means any developer in the world can download them, modify them, and build new tools on top of them. While the big US labs mostly keep their best models locked behind paid subscriptions, China is betting on giving theirs away. Demand for Kimi K3 was so high that Moonshot had to temporarily stop accepting new users ... they literally ran out of computing capacity. A few things that stood out to me: - The gap between the best open-source and closed-source models is getting smaller - More competition means better AI tools at lower prices for everyone - Open-source models give smaller companies and developers access to capabilities that used to be locked behind expensive APIs America still has big advantages in chips and investment. But the lead is narrower than most people realise. Do you think open-source AI will win out over closed models in the end? Or will the big US labs stay ahead? 👇

I think the U.S. will stay ahead for a little while longer, but as Alibaba and Moonshoot continue to not only progress in model performance, but keep the models affordable, the U.S.'s closed models will start losing ground to the "open weight" models. I have started building my own local OS with open weight models that I can run offline.
AI Tried to Draw My Job. It Drew My Approach
So the newest ChatGPT image on social media is creating a caricature of you and your job based on everything it knows about you. Seeing lots of great ones so thought I’d see what Vox (my ChatGPT) would create. Instead of a caricature of me doing bookkeeping things I got the first image. So I asked it again and got the second image. Seeing the Bigfoot, aliens, ufos that have never appeared in any chats with Vox it dawned on me that while others were getting realistic caricatures Vox was giving me symbolism so I asked it to tell me about the first image and this is what it said: It looks like you’re someone who brings order to chaos. You come across as a behind-the-scenes problem solver. Someone who works with systems, details, and processes that most people either do not understand or actively avoid. The desk full of tools, screens, and notes says you juggle a lot of moving parts and keep things running smoothly without much drama. You don’t look flashy or salesy. You look steady, trustworthy, and precise. The kind of person people rely on when something needs to be set up correctly, cleaned up, or fixed so it does not become a bigger problem later. You probably explain complicated things in a calm, practical way and help people feel less overwhelmed. If I had to guess blindly, I’d say: - You work with numbers, systems, or records - Accuracy matters more than speed - People come to you when they’re confused or stressed - You’re the “let me just handle this” person - In short: you look like someone who brings clarity, structure, and peace of mind to other people’s messes. And that made me ask about the story behind the second image (cuz I was curious about how Bigfoot and ufos fit into the picture. You are seated, not standing or posing, which matters. This is someone in the work, not performing it. Laptop in one hand, coffee in the other. That combination says mental work plus stamina. You think for a living, and you keep going. The headset suggests teaching, guiding, consulting, and explaining. You are not hidden behind numbers. You talk people through them.

Finally got around to trying this, so joining in the fun. I was smiling in the picture I gave it, so I have to assume I'm frowning in the caricuture because "taxes are due" 🤣
Is anybody creating apps with vibe coding?
Have you tried vibe coding? If so, what AI tool are you using for vibe coding? And what apps have you created so far? And if you have no idea what I am talking about - which is perfectly fine - just ask questions below and I will explain.

I am building a simple budgeting app for teenagers using Lovable. I'm testing it for accuracy and ease of use. But my one challenge is the publishing and deployment phase. For teenagers, it will need to be very user friendly, and quick to use as their attention is minimal 😃
🎄 This is Seriously Impressive...
The latest image model inside ChatGPT has taken a big step forward — especially when it comes to recognising facial features and generating consistent, realistic images of people. To show you what I mean, I’ve shared a Christmas-themed image of me and Sarah below. I was genuinely impressed by how well it captured our features! 🎅 Now it’s your turn... Create your own festive image using ChatGPT’s new image tool — and post it in the comments below. Let’s fill the thread with Christmas cheer! ✨ In the comments, I’ll also share the exact prompt I used to generate our image — feel free to copy, tweak, and make it your own. 👇 Drop your creation below — I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

That's a cool picture Mark. This was fun. Here's the original (my profile pic), and the Christmas version.
