Introduction
Hello. Just joined today. Looking forward to all that I will learn. I just moved into a new place at the beginning of the year and haven't the time or energy to grow much of anything yet. So, photo tax of the start of last years garden. I worked SO hard on it and did most of the work all by myself, even the fence. Although I had to move shortly after completing it I can look at this photo and be proud of everything I did.

Why Carrots Bolt ๐Ÿฅ•
Some of my carrots have started to bolt! So, it felt like the perfect time to share with you why that happens & what it means. ๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ "๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ " ๐ฆ๐ž๐š๐ง? - Bolting is when a plant sends up a flower stalk and starts producing seeds. - When carrots bolt, they create clusters of tiny white flowers that look a lot like Queen Anne's Lace, which is actually a wild relative of the carrot! ๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐จ ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ญ? - Carrots bolt in response to stress, typically associated with heat. - Since carrots are a cool-season crop, they do best in cooler temps (think 60โ€“70ยฐF/15-21โ„ƒ). - When the weather turns warm and stays warm, they interpret that as a signal that their window to reproduce is closing. ๐Ž๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐ž: - Temperature swings โ€” a period of cold quickly followed by heat - Inconsistent watering โ€” drought stress puts plants into survival mode - Being left in the ground too long โ€” the longer they sit past maturity, the more likely they'll bolt ๐‚๐š๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ž๐š๐ญ ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ฌ? - Unfortunately, no. Once a carrot bolts, the root becomes woody and fibrous. It's a bummer, but not all is lost! โœจ ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐’๐ข๐ฅ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  - The flowers are incredible for pollinators, especially beneficial insects like parasitic wasps and hoverflies. - If you're growing an heirloom variety, let the flowers go to seed, collect them, and you've got free seeds for next year! ๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐š๐ฏ๐จ๐ข๐ ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ง๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž ๐’๐จ๐ฐ ๐ข๐ง ๐Ÿ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ : - If you have mild winters & hot summers, sowing them in the fall is my preferred time of year. Theyโ€™ll germinate in the mild fall weather, overwinter in the ground, and are ready to harvest in late winter/early spring before it gets too hot. - If you have cold winters, sow in early spring, once your ground can be worked. ๐Š๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: - If you live in a short growing season or are sowing them later, choose a carrot variety with a shorter days to maturity. - Longer season growers have more flexibility here.

I grew carrots last year and I may have pulled them too early. They were stubby little things.
