䷿ Hexagram of the Week - #64 Before Completion
Hello, friends of the I Ching! Every week, we’ll explore one hexagram together: the symbol, the meaning, and how to apply it in real life. To open the circle, we start not with Hexagram 1… but with Hexagram 64: “Before Completion.” Why? Because it perfectly matches this moment: we’re at the threshold, full of potential, crossing into something new together. This is our beginning. ✨ 👉 The full lesson is now live inside the classroom section. Feel free to read, reflect, and share what was one insight or question this hexagram awakened for you?

Yang trapped within Yin Trigram
Regarding this Hexagram. I am interested in any comments on the Yang within Yin trigram that makes up the foundation of this hexagram. I am always a little apprehensive when I see this trigram at the beginning of any reading that I am doing. Are there any commentaries on this particular trigram that talk about the Yang line trapped within the Yin lines? How is this explained in natural occurrences, on mental, spiritual, and emotional planes of existence?

The yang line of kan is described as integrity within change and compared to how water changes shape (yin) but never loses its fundamental nature. So, for example, a person stuck in unfavourable circumstances can adapt without compromising their principles. Kan is also dark, deep, and mysterious like an underground cavern, or the strong silent type guarding their principles while doing what is necessary, going with flow, externally while remaining strong at the core. Iyam, #28, Ridgepole/Great Surpassing is basically an amplified Kan trigram, which is also why it precedes kan over kan, #29, so #28 is a good description of kan.

Thank you for creating this space. I enjoy discussions on Yijing theory, interpretation, and broader application such as TCM. I translate Classical Chinese and study mostly Daoism and Confucianism. I'm also a tuina practitioner (Chinese manual therapy) and guqin player.
