Hi Chris, would be great to get some more feedback on this one. I guess there's a question of likeness, and a question of rendering form using planes (with imagined top/butterfly lighting). Any help you can give with either of those endeavours would be greatly appreciated!
Another quick colour study
Had some time where I was just waiting around, so decided to do another colour study. Continuing the theme of women in hats I guess. I did not realise that I was slightly too zoomed in and consequently did not work all the way up to the border. However, the pink undertone as a result shows through in quite a nice way. I think my version is a bit more saturated in general, for example the background is maybe more bright and colourful, but I think overall the relationships are still reflected well. This time the film is Barry Lyndon directed by Kubrick.

@Chris Legaspi Thanks Chris. Yes I understand cooling it down and flattening it would help to push it deeper into the background. I was maybe a bit to caught up in the colours elsewhere to think in those terms.

Just something I did while on a train with nothing else going on. Now I'm looking at it again, it feels like the face is too prominent and too warm. To take this further, I'd try to darken the face a little, plus darken more around the head and silhouette of the shoulders to hopefully push them further back. Of course, I could also spend time trying to get a likeness but that wasn't the goal of the exercise. It's interesting to see how chromatic/saturated this kind of material gets. I think the pink feathery stuff transmits light and makes it more intensely colourful. It was also nice to see how colour temperature can tell the story of which planes are facing in which directions. At least it seems to me that the cool blue light tells a story of what faces upwards. Since my train journey finished I could not take it further, and some things like the colour of the jewellery I did not have time to really take a go at. The film is Wittgenstein directed by Derek Jarman by the way.

@Andrew Hewertson Thanks very much Andy! I'm very happy to hear you know Jarman's films too. I always thought he was not known about widely enough. Yeah I understand you want to focus on getting the drawing and the shading correct first, that is the basis for making solid images. Good to see you posting regularly

@Andrew Hewertson Wow, great that you got to see him! That's very cool

Focussing on planes, profiles and length of face. So these aren't homework, just trying to understand what I'm missing. There are lots more sketches than these but I think these show a bit of progress. And I know I'm still not quite getting it haha. Will pick up again tomorrow with planes part of homework.

These are great. You've caught a really nice likeness. It also seems like you're being quite analytical when you practice. I think I find the profile view the hardest, not sure why, but I appreciate the struggle.

Another head study with imagined top/butterfly lighting. It's nice to have an exercise that forces me to use some knowledge of planes. The likeness is not great, perhaps because the painting looks too wide and square-jawed. I also feel the form modelling in the mouth and chin is a bit confused. In terms of values, I wonder if I could have pushed some of the darks a bit darker. And finally, with imagined lighting one of the hardest things is to decide on a good shadow border shape. I ended up with something quite simple but it could have been nice to make it a bit more interesting to look at. Nevertheless, I'm still happy with it. It was fun to make and looks human!

@Chris Legaspi Hi Chris, thanks very much for the advice. I think I'd like to try out both avenues. Practising draughtsmanship with the brush sounds like a good way to transition to painting from drawing and really feel comfortable with the medium. I don't want to feel clumsier or more uncomfortable working with paint brushes compared to pencils. In fact, I'd like to try a large scale cast drawing for practice, but cannot find a decent cast for a decent price. Maybe it would be good to try a self portrait or some other way of drawing from life? Right now I'm working at roughly a quarter of an A4 sheet (which is A6 then I guess?). Yes, it's a good size to focus on mixing up the right values and figuring out where the planes of the face are and how they meet one another. I'll continue that until it really feels well internalised.
