My Perspective on AI in Healthcare
In the past few years I have been working in the field of artificial intelligence and healthcare This experience has made me deeply realize that artificial intelligence is not a disruptor of the healthcare industry but rather a collaborator that is gradually maturing what it changes is efficiency and precision not the essence of healthcare itself Artificial intelligence is good at processing large scale high dimensional data which naturally aligns with modern healthcare By analyzing medical imaging clinical records genetic data and long term health records AI can help doctors identify potential risks more quickly and provide more comprehensive support for clinical decision making I remain cautious yet long term optimistic about the future of artificial intelligence in healthcare As algorithms computing power and regulatory frameworks continue to mature artificial intelligence will increasingly take on repetitive and high intensity data work allowing doctors to devote more time and energy to complex judgment and human to human communication Ultimately the value of technology does not lie in how advanced it is but in whether it truly improves patient experience enhances the quality of care and makes the healthcare system more sustainable Someone once asked me a question:From an ethical perspective how much responsibility should artificial intelligence bear in medical decision making and how should responsibility be defined when errors occur I believe that artificial intelligence itself should not be regarded as a responsible subject It does not possess legal personhood and cannot bear moral or legal responsibility The final medical decision is made by the physician therefore the physician remains the primary person responsible for patient outcomes provided that the use of AI is reasonable informed and compliant with standards If an error arises from algorithmic flaws data bias system design problems or misleading outputs then responsibility should lie with the AI product provider or system designer including technology developers medical AI companies or system integrators In short AI should not be used as an excuse to shift responsibility away from humans but at the same time all risks should not be simply transferred to frontline physicians
