A Tale of Two Applications: Success and Roadblocks with Capital One as Non-Residents / ID Verification
My wife and I already tried to apply for Capital One credit cards online a year ago, but without success. Both applications failed due to a lack of proper identification. Prior to this, we had each received a pre-approval for Capital One’s starter cards (the Quicksilver and Savor). Based on these pre-approvals, we initiated the application process. However, the final step always failed because Capital One required a US ID for verification purposes—meaning a US-issued passport or a US driver's license. Multiple calls to the hotline didn't change anything either. Therefore, my strategy for our next trip to the US was to visit a physical Capital One location. However, in Las Vegas and Denver, which were on our vacation route, there are no traditional Capital One branches. Instead, they only have Capital One Cafés. In addition to getting financial advice, you can buy food and drinks there, or rent a desk to use as a workspace while traveling. Since I had just successfully applied for the Chase Sapphire Reserve shortly before our vacation, I didn't want to trigger a second credit card application with Capital One right away. So, my wife applied first. We went into the Capital One Café in Las Vegas, where a young lady—a so-called "Café Ambassador"—assisted us. The application wasn't filled out on a Capital One computer, but rather on her own smartphone. My wife was instructed to connect to the Capital One Wi-Fi network first and then started the application process normally through the link in the Capital One emails. Just like last year, everything went smoothly—but with one major difference: at the very end, she was not prompted to provide a US ID. Instead, she directly received a link to verify her identity by taking a photo of her (German) passport. She did this right there at the location, and the card was approved shortly after. Pleasantly surprised by this success, I decided to try the exact same thing two weeks later. I went into the Capital One Café in Denver, connected to the Wi-Fi network, and started the application process in the presence of the Ambassador there. I applied for a Quicksilver card.

@Ain - Cloud Resident First interim report: I’ve spoken to Capital One twice now. I can only call the application hotline. Whenever I call other numbers—specifically the ones for existing Capital One credit cardholders—I get referred back to the application hotline because they can’t access the data from my credit card application. What always works well is getting the initial representative to transfer me to a supervisor by saying: "I know your supervisor can accept a passport for verification." Before the transfer, the representative asks for my identification details (ITIN, date of birth, first and last name). The first supervisor immediately transferred me to the specialized department after I explained the problem. That didn't help much, though. At first, they emailed me a new upload link, but it still required a US state ID, just like before. When I pointed out that I only have a passport and needed an upload link for that, the person on the other end asked—with a reproachful tone—"Who gave you the (incorrect) information that you could identify yourself using a passport?" So, no success there. During the second call, I ended up speaking to a different supervisor. He took plenty of time—keeping me on the line without putting me on hold—to carefully examine the passport I had uploaded. Initially, he thought he could send me the link I needed. But then he found a note in my application stating that I could only verify my identity using a US ID. Consequently, he couldn't help me further and suggested I apply for a non-driver ID card in Texas instead. Wow, I was really disappointed after that call. The supervisor sounded genuinely friendly and helpful—and he *did* want to help—right up until he read that internal note. I’m really afraid that my application has been flagged negatively for some reason. I’ll keep trying, but my hope is fading with every unsuccessful call.
Chase Apple TV Benefit Activated - $156
The new Apple TV benefit is live in the Chase app, and activation was extremely easy. I opened the Chase app, went to Benefits, tapped the Apple TV subscription offer, clicked activate, and it automatically opened the Apple TV app on my iPhone. After linking my Apple ID, it was redeemed instantly. Mine now shows activated and good through June 17, 2027. The offer gives 1 year of complimentary Apple TV if activated by December 31, 2026. Chase shows the value as USD 156. Other benefits showing in my Chase app include the USD 100 Chase Travel hotel credit, up to USD 120 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck/NEXUS credit every 4 years, DashPass membership, DoorDash promos, and the new 3x categories for gas, EV charging, and vacation rentals. If you have the Sapphire Preferred, check your Benefits tab. This one took one tap.

NY Application for Non-Driver ID
Soon I will be in the US again and gonna have plans to go to the NY DMV and apply for a Non-Driver ID. I will be on ESTA. What I read here, it is quite easy and if you go with a standard, then you don't even need proof of address. Anyway there is also the option to go for REAL ID with proof of address. What I found is following: What does "TEMPORARY VISITOR" mean? A Temporary Visitor is defined as anyone who is not immigrating to or not permanently residing (living) in the United States. These visitors have US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) documentation that supports their legal status in this country. If you have DHS documents that identify you as a Temporary Visitor and have a REAL ID; your New York State driver license, permit or non-driver ID card will have: - "TEMPORARY VISITOR" on it - Your DHS document expiration date Please note that your DMV document does not expire on the Temporary Visitor expiration date, nor will your privilege to drive in New York. https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/resources-for-non-us-citizens It just says temporary visitor on the REAL ID thing, not for the standard. Does someone have a standard Non-Driver ID and can confirm it also has temporary visitor flag?

But you have to enter a NY adress in the application for the card. If you have an u.s. adress outside NY (TX in my case), you are not able to get that ID in NY, right?

@Ain - Cloud Resident If I have read the DMV website correctly, the ID card is sent by mail. Will the card then be sent to the address in NY that I provided with my application, or can I specify a different mailing address?
Minimize the RISK of Account Restriction/Shut Down
There can be hundreds of reasons for account restriction and shutdown. But we may not know all of them. Today, I am talking about a few ways to keep your account safe: - ALWAYS use US IP ( Tello/Proxy/Red Pocket) - Don't spend outside USA in physical store on new cards unless you got it in-person or has NRA status. Online international payment is fine but better not to have in-store tap for first 2-3 statements - Don't change your address for first few statement cycle - Don't give bank staff a reason to look at your account. A manual check means they can find issues with address or id or whatever... People saying Cap1 asking for US ID after system triggered a manual verification. **Most important** - TURN OFF BACKGROUND DATA on your banking apps. ( I think, this is very important. If your background data are on, it means your app can connect to the banking server; it will be sending request on background 24/7 and you wont be using tello data 24/7 ) - Even if you turn of background data, your app may connect. To be completely safe, HIDE & LOCK your apps in iOS. So, you need to unhide/unlock for the app to use internet. Keep on adding more guys...🔥

@Frank Morgan You can use the Curve card worldwide, but I think you can only order a Curve card when you live in Europe including the UK. There was a US Version of the curve card, but this service ended already.
