Class Recap- Tricks for Obedience
I bet y'all thought I forgot! I didnt...I just hadn't filmed any content... We talked about using spins to power up your heel; by having the dog spin into position, you can capture the joy and enthusiasm and keep that forward momentum in your Heel work. We talked about using paws up to work tuck sits/kick back stands. By giving the dog something to focus his front feet with, we isolate the back end. When the front stays still, you are able to maintain a clean heel position even with position changes. We also talked about using pivots- thus creates hidden end awareness and allows the dog to do those flashy pivot to heel moves. Again, with a prop for the front feet, they can concentrate on just the rear. Remember to practice turning both directions. Send to Mark - great way to start working on distance cues and listening away from the handler. Start close and build distance. If you have to step closer for a cue, make sure you back away as soon as the dog gets it. Don't get "stuck" in close (you'll see when I ask Hodge to back i have to take a couple steps) And, my favorite, the Go Around! Use it to power up your recall or drive into heel. Use it to practice interrupted cues. Use it to test your dogs listening skills (sometimes i send him around, sometime I heel right by it). This is also how I built up his "send over jump". There should be 6 videos, and a picture of the whiteboard :) let me know if you have questions!
