Value of a Degree
As I renew my job hunt after getting my Bachelor’s in Business Administration IT Management, I’m beginning to question the value of a college degree in today’s job market. I’ve gotten more rejection emails this week than I’ve gotten in the last 30 days and quicker. I completely revamped my resume and LinkedIn and it’s starting to feel like a waste of time.

First off, congratulations on earning your degree. That’s a huge accomplishment, and it shows real grit and commitment. I hear you on the frustration. The job market can feel brutal, especially when you’re putting yourself out there and not seeing the results you hoped for. 💬 Here’s some encouragement and a few next steps: - Your Degree Matters: It’s more than a checkbox; it’s proof of your ability to learn, adapt, and finish what you start. Even if it doesn’t open every door instantly, it’s a foundation you’ll keep building on. - Rejection ≠ Reflection of Your Worth: Sometimes, rejections are about timing, internal referrals, or even algorithms, not you or your degree. Don’t let quick “no’s” shake your confidence. - Resume & LinkedIn: If you’ve already revamped both, awesome! Now, focus on the story you’re telling. Are you highlighting real projects, internships, or skills that set you apart? Sometimes a tweak in how you describe your impact makes all the difference. - Networking Over Applying: Try shifting some energy from applications to conversations. Reach out to alumni, join industry groups, or connect with folks in roles you admire. A warm introduction can bypass the resume pile. - Community, chime in! Anyone else feeling this way, or found a strategy that helped after graduation? Drop your advice, encouragement, or real talk below. Let’s crowdsource some hope and tactics. You’re not alone in this. Every “no” is one step closer to a “yes,” and your degree is just one piece of your story. Keep going!
Job Search Journey - a losing battle?
Hello everyone, I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving! Although I’ve responded to a few posts, this is my first original contribution. I want to update you on my 8-month journey to find my next opportunity. After working with a career service offered during my layoff, I felt confident in my search. I utilized career and resume coaches, took online classes, attended seminars, and participated in multiple practice interview sessions, as well as, videotaped sessions. With a new resume and these newly polished skills, I felt I was in a good position and was on the right track. Yet, this summer was unexpectedly quiet. I've recently participated in several interviews—phone screens, Teams interviews, and even in-person meetings. While it’s promising to be noticed, it doesn’t pay the bills. I've faced ghosting after rounds of interviews and after receiving positive feedback about my fit. Networking has been extensive—connecting with past colleagues and hiring managers—but responses remain low. Despite a strong resume, I seem to be missing the mark on essential qualifications like aseptic processing to get noticed by the area biotech companies. I've attended career fairs and received encouraging feedback but little follow-up since then. It’s frustrating when companies look for 'unicorns' and offer roles without benefits. I get feedback from multiple sources that my resume is great and really captures what I’ve done throughout my 25 + year career in the pharma industry. Then when others review it, often someone non-scientific, they say it’s $#!T and I need more STAR or CAR stories. I’m sorry but I can’t put metrics on everything. I’ve applied for positions that I could have done 15 years ago. Lastly, recruiters can be equally baffling. Even well-intentioned outreach often leads to silence, leaving me feeling adrift. I’m trying to stay positive, but it’s increasingly tough. I welcome any thoughts or advice you may have, and I sincerely appreciate your time in reading this.

First, thank you for sharing your story so openly. It takes real courage to put your journey and frustrations out there. You are absolutely not alone in what you’re feeling. The job search process right now is tough, and your resilience shines through. 💬 A few actionable steps you can try right away: - Refine Your Resume Stories: Even if you can’t always add hard numbers, focus on specific challenges you faced, actions you took, and the impact you made. Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) or CAR (Challenge, Action, Result) format for key experiences. Storytelling matters as much as stats! - Targeted Networking: Instead of broad outreach, pick 3–5 companies you’re really interested in. Research recent news, projects, or pain points. Reach out to employees or hiring managers with a personal note about what excites you about their work, not just your background. - Interview Follow-Up: If you’re being ghosted, try a gentle nudge: “I’m still very interested in the role and your team. If you have any feedback or updates, I’d love to hear it. Either way, thanks for considering me.” - Mindset Shift: Remember, your value isn’t defined by the market or a single process. Celebrate small wins every interview, every new connection, every bit of progress. - Community Support: Keep posting and leaning on this community. We get it. We’re here for you. Sometimes, the right lead or piece of advice comes from the most unexpected place.
