Recycling doilies
This is one of my favourite crochet beginner projects. I made a large round table mat for my mums 100th birthday. It has the work of 6 unknown long time ago talented crocheters embedded in it. The children use embroidery cotton and a small latch hook to Make bridges around the edge of the antique patch. Of course more rounds can be added too. More Photos to follow soon

@Roslyn Hill I crocheted a lot of doilies when I was young and took them with me when I moved to Australia. Effectively nobody went them here. However my tablecloth is actually a fine lace crocheted blanket with a clear plastic cover above and I have many people who admired it. Here the plain table is the norm.
Saturday class follow up.. and the strangest crochet project!
This week we were recycling doilies. Florence is being very creative. She made another doll and is making lots of bags too. Di you manage to finish the yarn bag challenge ? I also met the lovely Di…. She taught herself to crochet , no Instructions, no traditional stitches either. And the strangest thing she was making blankets and Ing them Off to Africa for leapards! Has anyone else heard of that?

Some great work there.
Experimental crochet…how kids can crochet freestyle without a pattern
In my book ( 2018) I explain how a child wanted to make a blanket for her doll. However She didn’t know how to keep it flat and she said….oooo look I made a nest! I also have an absolute beginner project in the book which can be done after they have learned to make a chain length. I call it Beastie Brooches. (Or hook in anywhere) Yesterday two children were doing this. The young boy made his Beestie Bear (Alex) He enjoys making mixed media pictures so he stuck this onto his card. His older sister had more control and decided it would make a bowl… I said if you put a handle on it , it would be a basket. She was soooo pleased! The video is my grandson. ….”whatever it turns out to be”. He made a Light Saber!

Saturday class… lots of progress
Two new kids made bracelets and a collage. Florence made a yarn bag, and began another for great grandma. Did you make your yarn bag yet? Two children began the beastie brooch featured in my first book. One turned into Alex the bear and the other turned into a basket…yeah! Another young lady made a hat for her bat! It had a bullion bobble!

Very talented kids. They must have a great teacher.
What can you make using a latch hook?
Rugs?…. because that is what it was originally made for. Anything? I have been using a latch hook to crochet for over 10 years…because I can Mixed media projects? Kids love this easy way to crochet, it’s fun! Because it’s easier to get started than traditional methods. Garments? It’s experimental and you don’t need to learn how to follow a pattern Easy stuff? You only need to learn two stitches to get started! Easy kids projects? I have made a list of over 50 easy kids projects.
