BUILD THE MACHINE #3 - MAKE YOUR TEAM SMALLER
One of the best things we did as a staff was break our team down into small groupsāwhat we called battalions. Instead of one big team of 50ā60 playersā¦we created groups of 6ā8. Why? Because accountability changes when the group gets smaller. Itās one thing for a player to think: āI donāt want to let down 59 teammates.ā Thatās abstract. Itās another thing to think: āI canāt let down my 7 guys.ā Thatās personal. š HOW IT WORKED - Players were divided into small groups (battalions) - Each group had leadership within it - Players were accountable to their group daily - We even had different color shirts for each battalion (see pic) If a player messed up: - First time ā individual consequence - Second time ā the group was impacted Now itās not just about disciplineā¦itās about ownership š„ WHAT WE LEARNED Players will sometimes let themselves down. Very few will let their teammates down. šÆ THE REAL WIN The most powerful part? Players started holding each other accountable. Not because coaches said soābut because they didnāt want to be the reason their group suffered. Thatās when culture shifts. š§ TAKEAWAY FOR COACHES If you want better accountability: š Make your team smaller inside the big team š Create groups where everyone is seen š Let players feel responsibility to each other Because behavior changes when it becomes personal On May 1 you will be able to track things like this daily inside Arena OVRānot just performance, but accountability and teammate behavior.
