When old friends still think you do freelance work...
Notorious P.I.G. here, On Thursday last week my buddy Marion text me out of the blue. We worked together for years, first as custodians, then at a web design firm. He's the best PHP programmer I've ever known. When I got fired from the company in 09' we slowly drifted apart. Eventually the entire company dissolved and my friend was forced to start freelancing. He did pretty good for himself. We stayed connected but it was usually by bumping into each other at church or in public. Hadn't heard from him in over a year. So when he text me this morning: "Do you have any experience with Hubspot? I have a client that's looking for help for about 1-2 months." I was immediately reminded of just how far apart we are now. He had no idea I don't do service provider work anymore. How did I reply? I thanked him for thinking of me but that I'm out of the service provider game. He asked what I was up to these days. I told him about deal making and licensing. Maybe some of those clients could use a deal maker in their business? Whether we work something out or not... Hopefully we can catch up in person soon. Turns old relationships into new revenue
Chad here... This weekend I got a "Payment Failed - Action Required" email. When I opened it I realized it was for my former client's membership service. Didn't know I still got notices. Now...we still keep in touch and I'll do small tasks for her on occasion. So I reached out to make sure she got the notice too. She did. She paid it. But then I got curious. "How much is that costing you per year?" Just under $1,000. Hmmm. So I dug a little deeper with a few more questions. Turns out... She wasn't doing ANYTHING with the membership or her flagship program. Last year her husband had a stroke. She also did a ton of traveling. Several events for this flagship program. The bottom line? She was burned out. Taking this year off. And right there... I saw it. A trashcan asset we could cash flow. I shared the idea of taking her previous course and licensing it to students who went through the program. How we could bring in new money and students without her having to lift a finger. Even made a bumbly Loom video to show her what I was thinking. She's heading out of town today but we're connecting later this week. Now here's the thing... This lady was probably my favorite client. Easy to work with, listened to my suggestions and eager to pay her invoices. And now? This former client could become a new partner. What I want my PiggyBANKERS to know is deal making isn't limited to cold outreach. That does work for sure. But the EASIEST deals? They're sitting right in front of them. Former clients they loved working with. People who already trust them. Folks who know they deliver. That's why I'm considering putting together Deal Makin' Bacon.
