Don't Lose Your Best Tech This Winter
Hey Blueprint fam, Slow season doesn't just cost you jobs. It costs you people. Here's the mistake I see every year. Work slows down. Hours get cut. Your best tech starts getting texts from the shop down the road. And by March you're panic hiring whoever answers the ad. That's the real cost. Not the slow month. The busy season you walk into short-handed. Training someone new while the phone rings off the hook. Callbacks. Bad reviews. You back in the truck doing every job yourself. Your good techs don't leave because of one slow week. They leave because they don't know what's coming. Uncertainty is what drives them out. So kill the uncertainty. Sit down with your crew this week. Tell them the plan for the slow months. Give them work that builds the business. Shop cleanup and truck stocking. Maintenance plan visits. Calling past customers. Training the newer guys. Writing down how your best jobs get done so the next hire learns it right. Busy hands stay. Idle hands start looking. If you can't keep everyone at full hours, tell them straight. Tell them when it turns back on. A tech who trusts you will ride out a slow month. A tech who's guessing won't. Keep your people. Build your systems while you do it. Walk into busy season ready. So tell me. What's your plan to keep your crew busy and paid this winter? Drop it below. I'm right here with you. — Chris

Calling past customers is the one I'd start with. Pull everyone who got a quote this year and never booked, and send each a short text asking if the job is still on their list. Slow weeks are when those quotes turn into work. Does your crew keep a running list of those quotes, or does it live in your head?
