Day 1 - Scent Adventure
Hello!! Here’s my first scent session with Ody, a shelter dog. I’m feeling a little shy about filming these videos😂🙈 We went for a walk first and when we returned to the shelter, I introduced him to anise scent. He’s a very busy boy and gets highly overstimulated by almost everything. I was happy to see him make a few attempts to sniff the tin, even though he was mainly focused on my hand and getting the treats. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how I can improve our sessions! @Ave Paasuke

Aww, thank you! One of the challenges is that he gets overstimulated by everything. As soon as he sees me approaching his kennel and realizes I’m going to take him out, he starts panting heavily and it continues throughout the whole visit. Of course, the weather contributes to it but he generally pants a lot. I’m trying to help him calm down, though it will take plenty of practice to bring down his excitement levels. As I’m right-handed and I’ve noticed that he knows the treats will come from my right hand, so he’s always focused on it. I’ll start switching the hand I use to feed him. I’ll also wait until after I’ve marked the behaviour before reaching into my pocket. I was so focused on getting the “perfect” timing when marking that I kept my hands in my pockets 😂
Day 38 & 39 - Lyon
I feel like we have done quite a lot of training over the yesterday and today. It's largely been scentwork and contact heeling inside although the contact practice has been done outside too. And then when out on a walk there's been a retrieve or two plus some stay and heel practice. @Robyn Peterson and @Ave Paasuke Here is our final offering for the contact heeling. I'm absolutely astonished by how entertaining he has found this.

Scent work for shelter dogs
Hello there! I’m new to the community. I live in the Netherlands and will soon be starting a program in Clinical Animal Behavior. I’ve always wanted to learn more about scent work, so I’m excited to finally give it a go! I volunteer at an animal shelter in Amsterdam, and I’m curious whether it’s realistic to introduce scent work to shelter dogs. There’s one dog in particular that I’ve been assigned to work with, and I’ll be at the shelter 2–3 times a week. Would that be enough consistency for him to learn and benefit from it? He’s a 3 year old bully mix who gets overstimulated quite easily and seems to have endless energy. I’d love to explore scent work as a way to give him some mental enrichment and hopefully help him regulate, decompress, and settle a little more easily. I’d really appreciate any tips or experience from people who’ve done scent work with shelter dogs. :)

Thank you, Ave! That's great to hear! I've ordered some supplies, and I'm just waiting for them to arrive so I can start working with the shelter dog. I'll definitely check out the behavior corner. Thanks a lot, and I'm looking forward to deepening my skills here :)
