Lecture Notes From Todays Call
Four Dimensions of Mental Performance - @Nicholas Davenport Nicholas's framework treats mental performance as a trainable system across four concurrent dimensions: 4 - Personality — default trait characteristics; establishes the baseline disposition before any performance situation - Cognitive Performance — how the brain processes and manipulates information in real time (decision-making, reaction time, working memory, inhibition control) 5 - Stress Management — mental skills for regulating productive vs. unproductive stress (eustress vs. distress); assessment must precede management 67 - Mental Physicality — translating all of the above into goal-directed behavior and action 5 Resilience vs. Mental Toughness vs. Grit - Resilience = bouncing back and surviving adversity; necessary but not sufficient 8 - Mental Toughness = adapting and finding new routes once back in the scenario; defined by three factors: Confidence, Constancy (delayed gratification, perseverance), and Control (not letting uncontrollables derail performance) 9 - Grit = overlapping but distinct; the three terms are interchangeable caricatures unless properly segmented 10 - Key reframe: "Is this difficult, or is it just different?" — the brain is wired for plasticity and adapts to novel stimuli like a muscle 11 Personality & the Big Five (HEXACO) - Traits assessed: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism 12 - Personality is stable by default but behaviorally overridable — analogous to dominant vs. non-dominant hand 13 - Research finding (285 participants, majority athletes): Extroversion correlated most strongly with Confidence; Conscientiousness with Constancy; Emotionality with Control 14 - Assessment was compressed from 120 questions to ~19 key questions for practical coaching use 14 - Neuroticism is the trait to minimize — high scorers catastrophize minor setbacks and are more easily derailed 15 Performance Identity
