ADHD Meds. Any Feedback?
If you've been officially diagnosed with ADHD and opted to give meds a try I'd love to get your feedback on that entire experience. I was late-diagnosed at 52 (now 56) and opted to give them a try. In part I had high hopes they would "fix" my broken brain but the addict in my also looked forward to pumping some new stimulant drug into my body just for the rush. Over about 3 months I worked through a few different options, starting with two 𝗻𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀. 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻 - Prefrontal cortex - blocks both the dopamine transporter (DAT) and norepinephrine transporter (NET), raising extracellular dopamine and norepinephrine 𝗔𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘅𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 (𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮) - Prefrontal cortex — selectively blocks the norepinephrine transporter (NET), leaving little effect on other neurotransmitter systems Neither one moved the needle for me. So I moved on to 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀. 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝘆𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 - Prefrontal cortex — blocks the dopamine transporter (DAT) and norepinephrine transporter (NET), so both neurotransmitters stay active in the synapse longer The side effects were less than desirable with this one and it was at that time I decided to stop experimenting and just focus on lifestyle, nutrition and finding a coach. I want to be clear, this is not an anti meds post. Plenty of people I've talked to found the right medication at the right dose and it changed their life. Meds can absolutely work. So if you're open to it, share your own journey with ADHD medication below. 👇 Your experience could be exactly what someone else needs to read before they decide whether to go down that road themselves.

Since everyone is different, the only thing I can offer from my experience is that in this class of drugs (at least with Ritalin) that the generics are largely not great. There was one for Concerta that was taken off the market. Generics cannot use a brand patented time release mechanism so the time release is different such as dumping more in the morning that brand name. I started with brand names but I caved in and take Biphentin (sp?) generic now. The adjustment wasn't too bad.
Tips & Tricks Of All Shapes And Sizes
Following up on my previous "Let's Build The List: Share Your Best ADHD System" and have created a Tips & Tricks page. I've added several more techniques and the one that I've using for the past few months is speaking to Claude to capture thoughts and place them in specific lists. I have a single thread which has several lists and I'll tell Claude the idea and which list to add it to. Another thing I like is that I just ask it to read me back all the items in the list so I can "remember" what I added. Curious if anyone else has given that a try?

I am so glad you’ve done that. When I was in my total extreme bad burnout with my other neurodivergent stuff as well I felt like there was no list or collection of different kind of regulating ideas or tips or things like that. Since I was alone, and I had zero support through it all, I came up with all this stuff and decided to share it in the community. I was part of because there was nothing like that there. I’ve been derailed by a whole bunch of tech technology & securities stuff, but I’m back. I have a lot to catch up on. Your continued posting is motivating.

@Joe Keohan oh I see I repeated myself. That is how my executive function has been. The overload is fortunately over now.
Taking Action Is The Only Way Forward
The one single piece of advice that I would share with anyone struggling with ADHD is this... TAKE ACTION!!!! Lets face it, you already have an idea of what you need to work on and if not then your only 1 AI chat away from being provided with a list of 100 things to try. But none of that knowledge is ever going to amount to much until you TAKE ACTION on at least 1 thing. No if you've made it to this community then you've already taken action. You've made the decision to surround yourself with like minded people and thats a step in the right direction for sure. But now that your here what will be the next baby step you can take?

I am with you on that one. You have to take a step forward and just start. The work put in is what you get. I still have a lot to do around the final frontier which is nutrition. It's like a video game, as soon I get to one level another one appears. My first step - no pun intended - was joining a walking challenge. Success begets success with baby stops. Since then I have walked over 900,000 since the second week of June on my way to a million. This still feels unbelievable. I never thought I could do it.

@Joe Keohan it still seems so bizarre that I'm gonna be hitting 1 million steps. It seems unbelievable. I'll have to check out that book. It really works that way the small wins add up. So if there's anybody in your group, just take a step one step no predetermined outcome no expectation just one step.

@Joe Keohan a friend had given me that book. I found it interesting. I like to share stuff if I think it might be of any value. I definitely will look into your breakfast information. It might be a good place to start.

Hi, thanks so much. No, I haven't got the breakfast document yet, and that actually would be quite helpful. Nutrition is the final frontier for me. A friend gave me that book, and so when I see things that might be handy, I like to pass them on. I will check out your breakfast. I need more protein!

I'd say these are the top most useful things, there are others but it would be too long. Going from getting up between noon and 2 pm to 9:15 Sleep issues that have to still be resolved. I can give workshops on sleep hygiene, so it's not that It will get worked out. Sleep is unrelated to that. Get up and go directly out to grab a coffee and my morning walk. My naturopath has been trying to get me do that for decades. I'm finally doing it now. A big thing for me organizationally is that I hooked up my calendar, reminders and email to Claude. It's so great. I mapped out up whole day. I then gave it Claude. I can have a conversation with Claude about what do I have for tomorrow morning or whatever. I can get it to look out for certain emails. Also, for my schedule, I have notifications and those notifications go to my Fitbit, which vibrates which just kinda lets me know where I'm out during the day. Habit stack on to that. Ten minutes timed clean up - small but very effective. I don't watch TV anymore & greatly reduced the amount of news in that kind of content. Silence is my baseline now. That and Endel There are other things but these are my top few. I had to bring myself out of a hole. Accountability was the key missing component and a results-based online community. And working with Mike of course. We had a lot of work to do to get me semi-glued back together. Many more things to add over time. I audit my days at the end to see what went well and to look and any adjustments for the next day.

Oh I also chose the things I least wanted to do. Dove into resistance head on.
