I'm not much into scare mongering and spamming others with scam alerts, and that's not to say they do not occur, or that people are not prey to scurrilous behaviour everywhere, including Portugal. I share this one however in good faith and because of the potentially huge challenges it might pose for foreigners and those new to the country (and eager to comply with officialdom). Its veracity I cannot confirm and have no first or third-hand experience to share, but it might be worth knowing about, as it was shared with me... "Just got this info about a new scam, translated from Portuguese: For your information, please be aware that there is a group of people who go from door to door pretending to be employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. They have Ministry documents and letterheads and claim that they need to check that everyone has a valid ID for the next census, and then they "steal". They're everywhere and look elegant. Someone will come to your house and say they want to take your photo/fingerprint. According to one scam, they have a laptop, a biometric device and a list of all the names. They show you the list and ask for all this information. Please be aware that there is no initiative on the part of the government. Please understand that all of this is false. Don't give them any information. Everyone must be alert and vigilant. Send it to all the groups in your community. Please inform your family and friends. ATTENTION"
