Breeder bin reset. I was wrong!!!
So I reset this breeder bin 5 days ago, after a 28 day cycle because "It had very few cocoons". I went to do a weekly moisture/cocoon check and found this between the weirdo bubble wrap and white paper I'm trying out. 😲😲😲 100s or maybe even a 1,000 baby worms. Guess I was wrong about the bin not producing 🪱👶🪱

@Jason Evans Cherene & The Clew... Not sure if it's as good as being a pip... but it works for me.

@Alysia Ritschel this is the thread we were talking about.
Paper Shedder
What is the best paper shredder that also does cardboard? What specs do I look for?

I have an 18 sheet cross cut. Same brand as Cherene’s but here is micro cut. My research said cross cut would last longer when doing cardboard, but time will tell! Bonsai is the brand.
How do you spot an adult red wiggler?
These are red wiggler worms, and here I show the difference between baby, juvenile, and adult worms. All are fantastic eaters and will make worm castings, but adult worms are the once that can make cocoons.

The last two days I introduced myself to all of them and got quite familiar with who was who in the entire clew while separating adults for my breeder bins. It's surprising sometimes. Small worms doesn't always mean juveniles and large aren't always adults. You do have to look!

@Dallas Rising it's hard to leave them alone when you get started! It's not like the old ant farms where you could watch them all the time!
Pre-composting Experiment
And a head scratcher. Do these dang things EVER cool down and stay down? On the 2nd and 3rd wave, do they take forever to cool down? I fluffed one that I thiught was done because there were some anaerobic spots on the bottom, put some dry cardboard on the bottom to keep that from happening. Closed it up and it's at 107.6⁰ this morning! My other one was still about 97 but dropping, fluffed it to make sure there wasn't any anaerobic spots as well and it's at 102⁰! This biota is out of control! Question. Does it make sense to put a small layer of dry cardboard shred on the bottom all the time to soak up excess moisture and stave off anaerobic activity? Getting the moisture perfect isn't always easy. Has anyone tried that? Seems like that biota soaked shredded would be a good start for the next batch. Now for the experiment. I put 17 units of dry cardboard, 17 units of finely ground SMS and 14 units of Starbuck's finest, 4 handfulls of pre-compost from the 2 crazy bins and mixed it up. I didn't have any veggie slop, so wanted to see if the coffee, pre-compost and SMS had enough biota to make things happen. It's up to 85⁰ today - about 10⁰. So maybe. I'm going to start recording my mixes and see what gets the best biota response and then the best worm response - meaning cocoon and casting production.

@Jason Evans that reminds me. I want to use index cards as well, but I want holders that the cards slip into so I can just pull the card out, write on it and put it back in. Taped sticky notes are a pain to write in especially when the angle is weird. And they're flimsy. (Lotta water flying around bins over here too!) A burrito bottom is an even better idea! I have screen material, I could cut it to size and keep the dry from the wet. I don't use the screen for the top burrito, I bought laundry bags. Less mess but you're right. A LOT of biota. I'm in the hot tub now, but I'll take a Pic later.

@Jason Evans I'll use the screenshot for the same reason. I have it on hand! Funny how much uou can save when you look around at stuff collected over the years or that you throw away. I've taken to using cottage cheese contai ers to measure everything. We eat a lot if it.
Come ask questions at worm farming office hours!
Tomorrow, Monday at 12 noon, we will have our first “office hours.” Anyone is welcome, but no pressure! I’m wanting to record and have the replays for anyone who can’t make it live. No questions are dumb questions, and I’m excited to all learn from each other. Hope to see anyone there who wants to learn a little more about these wormies!

I will be there! Our internet has been out all weekend and may still be out for a couple days. Phone service to get in is intermittent as well. So I may be where you are in the video @Cherene Packard - the car! But I'll be there!

I help people stop staring into the fridge, feed themselves better, and let worms turn the leftovers into black gold.
