🌅 Good morning, team! New day, new chance to push your band score up. Let's go 💪
🎤 SPEAKING TASK OF THE DAY — Part 2 (Cue Card) Describe a piece of technology you find useful. You should say: - what it is - how you learned to use it - how often you use it - and explain why you find it so useful. (You have 1 minute to prepare. Then talk for 2 minutes.) Band 6 model snippet:"I want to talk about my smartphone. I use it every day for lots of things, like messages, maps and music. It's very useful because I can do many tasks in one place, and I would feel lost without it." Band 8 upgrade:"The piece of technology I'd like to talk about is my smartphone, which has become indispensable to my daily routine. I rely on it around the clock for everything from navigation to staying in touch. What makes it so valuable is that it streamlines countless tasks into a single device — honestly, I'd be lost without it." - indispensable = absolutely necessary (stronger than "very useful") - around the clock = all day and night (natural idiom for frequency) - streamlines = makes processes simpler/more efficient (precise, high-level verb) 👉 Record yourself for 2 minutes or drop your answer in the comments — I'll give feedback! ✍️ WRITING TASK OF THE DAY — Task 2 (Opinion) "Some people believe that smartphones have made people less sociable in real life. To what extent do you agree or disagree?" Skeleton outline: 1. Intro: paraphrase the topic + state your clear position. 2. Body 1: reasons phones can reduce face-to-face contact (distraction, "phubbing"). 3. Body 2: counter-side — phones also connect us across distance. 4. Conclusion: restate your stance. 📌 Examiner tip: Don't sit on the fence. "To what extent" essays need a clear, consistent opinion from intro to conclusion. Wavering between agree/disagree confuses the examiner and lowers your Task Response score. 🎯 Lower level: just write a strong 2-3 sentence introduction.🎯 Advanced: write the full essay in 40 minutes (250+ words). 📖 READING TIP OF THE DAY — True / False / Not Given

Smartphones have become an indispensable part of modern life and have significantly changed the way people communicate. While some people believe that smartphones have made people less sociable in real life, I partly agree with this view because, although they can reduce face-to-face interaction, they also help people maintain relationships across long distances. On the one hand, smartphones can make people less sociable in their daily lives. This is primarily because many individuals spend hours scrolling through social media, watching videos, or replying to messages instead of interacting with the people around them. For example, it is common to see a group of friends sitting together in a café while each person is looking at their own smartphone instead of having a conversation. As a result, face-to-face communication becomes less meaningful, and personal relationships may gradually weaken. On the other hand, smartphones also play an important role in helping people maintain relationships across long distances. This is because many people can be users to make phone calls, send instant messages, and have video chats regardless of where they live. For example, my parents live in Indonesia while I live in the United Kingdom. Even though we are thousands of miles apart, we regularly communicate through video calls and text messages, which helps us stay close despite the distance. That is why, I believe that smartphones can strengthen relationships when they are used responsibly. In conclusion, I partly agree that smartphones have made people less sociable in real life because they can reduce direct interaction However, they also play an essential role in maintaining relationships across long distances. Therefore, I believe that smartphones are a valuable tool when used in moderation and with self-discipline.
Happy Saturday, team! 🌱 Small daily reps beat weekend cramming — let's go
🗣️ SPEAKING TASK OF THE DAY (Part 2 — Cue Card) Describe a place in your city that you enjoy visiting. You should say: - where it is - how often you go there - what you do there - and explain why you enjoy visiting this place. You have 1 minute to prepare (make notes) and should talk for 2 minutes. Band 6 model: "There's a small park near my flat that I really like. I go there a few times a week, usually in the evening. I walk around, sometimes I sit and read. I enjoy it because it's quiet and I can relax after work." Band 8 upgrade: "There's a tucked-away park near my flat that I'm particularly fond of. I pop over a few evenings a week to stroll around or unwind with a book. What draws me to it is the calm — it's the perfect antidote to a hectic workday." - tucked-away = hidden/quiet (natural, high-level adjective) - particularly fond of = strong, idiomatic way to say "really like" - unwind = relax; a precise verb examiners reward 👉 Record yourself for 2 minutes and drop the audio (or your notes) in the comments! ✍️ WRITING TASK OF THE DAY (Task 2 — Opinion) Some people believe that public money should be spent on preserving old buildings, while others think it would be better used on building new housing. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Skeleton: 1. Intro — paraphrase the question + state your opinion. 2. Body 1 — the case for preserving heritage buildings. 3. Body 2 — the case for new housing. 4. Conclusion — restate your position clearly. Examiner tip: A "discuss both views" essay MUST cover both sides, even if you lean one way — answering only your own opinion caps you on Task Response. 🎯 Lower level: just write the introduction (2–3 sentences). 🎯 Advanced: full 250+ word essay in 40 minutes. 📖 READING TIP OF THE DAY — True/False/Not Given traps Trap: don't confuse False with Not Given. False = the passage says the opposite. Not Given = the passage simply doesn't tell you. Mini-passage: "The museum, opened in 1904, attracts over two million visitors annually. Its collection focuses mainly on regional pottery. Admission has been free since 2010."

Some people argue that public money should be used to preserve old buildings because of their historical and cultural value, while others believe it would be more beneficial to invest in building new housing. I believe governments should prioritize new housing while continuing to protect the most significant heritage buildings. On the one hand, preserving old buildings is important because they reflect a country’s history, culture and identity. This is primarily because historic buildings provide future generations with an opportunity to learn about the past and appreciate traditional architecture. For example, famous historical landmarks such as Monas in Jakarta Indonesia often become symbols of a nation and contribute significantly to the tourism industry. As a result, I argue that spending public money on preserving culturally important buildings can bring both educational and economic benefits. On the other hand, many people argue that governments should focus on constructing new housing. This is because in many countries, rapid population growth and urbanization have resulted in housing shortages and rising property prices. For instance, many families in India struggle to find safe and affordable homes. Consequently, investing in new housing can improve people’s quality of life, reduce homelessness, and support economic growth by creating jobs in the construction industry. Since adequate housing is a basic human, I believe it deserves greater priority than preserving old buildings that may have limited practical use. In conclusion, preserving old buildings helps protect cultural heritage and promotes tourism, whereas investing in new housing addresses pressing social issues and improves living standards. Although both are important, I completely believe tthat public money should primarily be spent on building new housing while ensuring that the most valuable heritage buildings are carefully preserved.
🌟 Happy Friday, team — let's finish the week strong! Today is all about the screens we can't put down. 📱
Describe a website or app you use often. You should say: - what it is - how often you use it - what you use it for - and explain why you find it useful. You have 1 minute to prepare and make notes, then talk for 2 minutes. Band 6 snippet: "The app I use most is a maps app. I use it every day to find places. It's good because it shows me the fastest way and I don't get lost. I think it saves me a lot of time." Band 8 upgrade: "The app I rely on most is a navigation app, which has become absolutely indispensable in my daily routine. I turn to it constantly to plan routes and avoid traffic jams. What makes it so valuable is that it spares me the hassle of getting lost in unfamiliar areas." - indispensable = something you can't manage without (stronger than "good") - turn to = a natural phrasal verb meaning "rely on/use" - spares me the hassle = saves me from an annoying difficulty 🎙️ Record yourself for 2 minutes and post your answer in the comments — I'll give feedback! ✍️ WRITING TASK OF THE DAY (Task 2 — Opinion) "Some people believe smartphones have made our lives easier, while others think they have created new problems. Discuss both views and give your own opinion." Skeleton outline: - Intro: paraphrase the topic + state your opinion - Body 1: benefits (instant communication, access to information) - Body 2: drawbacks (distraction, reduced face-to-face contact) - Conclusion: restate your view clearly 📌 Examiner tip: In "discuss both views" essays, you MUST cover both sides fairly before giving your opinion. Answering only one side caps your Task Response score! 🎯 Easier goal: Write just the introduction (2 sentences).🚀 Full goal: Write the complete 250-word essay. 📖 READING TIP OF THE DAY — Watch the paraphrase trap Answers almost never use the same words as the passage. Scan for the idea, not the exact word. Mini-passage: "The city council introduced a scheme to reduce private car use in the centre. Free buses were offered during peak hours. Within a year, traffic congestion had noticeably eased."

Writing Task 2: Smartphones have become an essential part of modern life. Some people argue that smartphones have made our lives easier, while others say that they have created new problems. I believe that the advantages of smartphones outweigh their disadvantages. On the one hand, smartphones have greatly improved the way people communicate and access information. This is because they allow users to stay in touch with their family, friends, and colleagues instantly through phone calls, text messages, and video calls, regardless of distance. For example, my parents live in Indonesia while I live in the United Kingdom. Even though we are thousands of miles apart, smartphones allow us to communicate regularly and stay connected. As a result, distance is no longer a barrier to maintaining close relationships. Therefore, I strongly agree that smartphones have made communication much easier, especially for people who live far away from their loved ones. On the other hand, smartphones have also created several challenges. This is primarily because many people spend hours scrolling through social media or playing games, which can reduce concentration and negatively affect academic or professional performance. Furthermore, heavy reliance on smartphones may weaken face-to-face communication. Instead of interacting in person, people often prefer texting, which can lead to weaker social relationships and feelings of isolation. From this case, I think people can manage healthy digital habits, such as limiting screen time and prioritizing real life interactions, consequently people can enjoy the advantages while minimizing the negative effects. In conclusion, smartphones have made life easier by improving communication and providing instant access to information, but they have also contributed to distraction and reduced personal interaction. Overall, I believe they are an extremely valuable tool when used responsibly.
Looking for My Next Great Read
Yesterday, I downloaded Kindle because teacher @Ellen Chamilothoris recommended it. Today, I just finished reading On Writing by Stephen King. Do you have any book recommendations, teacher, or anyone else?

Good morning team — 🗣️ SPEAKING TASK OF THE DAY (Part 2 — Cue Card) Describe a piece of technology you find useful. You should say: - what it is - how you learnt to use it - how often you use itand explain why you find it so useful. (You have 1 minute to prepare and make notes, then talk for 2 minutes.) Band 6 model: "I'd like to talk about my phone. I use it every day for messages, maps and music. I learnt to use it just by trying things and asking my friends. It's useful because I can do many things in one place." Band 8 upgrade: "I'd like to talk about my smartphone, which has become indispensable to my daily routine. I picked it up intuitively, mostly through trial and error, and now I rely on it for everything from navigation to staying in touch. What makes it so valuable is that it streamlines countless tasks into a single device." - indispensable = absolutely necessary (stronger than "useful") - picked it up intuitively = learnt naturally without instruction - streamlines = makes a process simpler and more efficient 👉 Record yourself for 2 minutes, then drop your answer in the comments! ✍️ WRITING TASK OF THE DAY (Task 2 — Opinion) "Some people believe that technology has made our lives more complicated rather than easier. To what extent do you agree or disagree?" Skeleton: 1. Intro: paraphrase the statement + state your position clearly. 2. Body 1: reasons technology simplifies life (speed, access, automation). 3. Body 2: reasons it adds complexity (overload, dependence) — then weigh up. 4. Conclusion: restate your stance, no new ideas. Examiner tip: Don't sit on the fence. "To what extent" questions need a clear position from sentence one — vague answers cap you at Band 5–6 for Task Response. - 🎯 Lower levels: write a strong 2-sentence introduction that paraphrases and states your opinion. - 🎯 Advanced: write the full essay (250+ words) in 40 minutes. 📖 READING TIP OF THE DAY — True / False / Not Given The trap: "Not Given" means the text neither confirms nor contradicts the statement. Don't use outside knowledge or guess from "sounds true."
