The Full Retirement Age (FRA) is now 67. Starting SSA before your FRA will permanently reduce your benefits.
Spousal benefits
Hi Ed, I retired at 62 and got spousal benefits, but my husband is still working at 71. Do I get more spousal benefits because he continues to work?

I’m afraid that your benefits were locked in at a reduced rate since you retired before your FRA. That’s a permanent reduction.
How to start collecting SS in January
when and how do I apply for my benefits to start for the 2027 year?

I believe that will get you 11 payments in 2027 starting with February. Remember, our very first SSA check/ deposit is delayed by one month for all of us. It’s standard practice.

Starting benefits in December 2026 will get you monthly payments starting in January, just as you initially mentioned to receive no SSA payments in 2026 since your first payment will be delayed by one month plus. Start in Dec., first payment in Jan.

Moving froward and already at age 70, your SSA benefits have maxed. Claim now.
