Looking after a little one with a very nasty strain of the flu, and youโ€™re still recovering too, but needs must and you have to go to the store ๐Ÿ˜ญ

For those not following me on Instagram, I had my little boyโ€™s first parent/teacher meeting last night. Although my language is improving, I really felt the cultural differences in their feedback. Nothing negative, just different in what they focused on and their expectations. Have any of you felt the same thing? https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSKELtSDOoD/?igsh=ZDFmOWZoaHQybDM1

When we were living overseas I homeschooled my boys until they were 10 so parent teacher conferences were easy! ๐Ÿ˜‰ After that the boys went to international schools. There was a subtle difference between the US and UK school system but nothing major. My ex-husband is Italian, and I definitely did see differences in how his family raised and educated their children and what they prioritized. They thought I was a weirdo! ๐Ÿ˜‚

@Maria White I have so many examples of how they thought I was a weird parent. The funniest one (to me) is that they had this thing that their children weren't allowed to be cold. After a session in a place centre during winter, all the mums used to get hairdryers out of their bags to dry the sweat off the children before they bundled them up in a million layers to get to the car. (To be fair, I thought THAT was weird! ๐Ÿ˜‚) So I just used to tell my boys to "RUUUN" to the car all sweaty!! It was literally a 3 second dash! They used to say that my boys would get pneumonia!! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Different cultures (includign our own) are funny sometimes aren't they?

Anyone else feeling stretched to the max this week? Iโ€™m definitely treading water, what with Christmas concerts, December birthdays, staff meetings and exhausted kids (mine included), Iโ€™m hanging out for Friday evening! Let me know how your week is going. Drop a comment below ๐Ÿ‘‡

I'm feeling it.... but in a good way. I'm trying to keep up with my work as much as possible because that's the only thing that gives me structure these days! I've cut back on a lot of the Christmas prep this year, which feels soooooo good. But I have grown up children, so that's much easier to pass on! I hope you're able to take some time out for some self-care in your chaos and can slow down enough to fully enjoy some of the activities.

@Marianne Arienzale Christmas movies? I love The Santa Clause!

Lovely morning putting up the Xmas tree with the toddler (for the first time!). Feeling bittersweet as always at this time of year - missing friends and family - but for the first time in many years Iโ€™m excited. Celebrating Xmas with children makes it all the better ๐Ÿฅฐ Your experiences mammas?

Ahh yes, Christmas with children is the BEST! Mine are all grown up now and it's just not the same! Expat Christmas's are bitter sweet ๐Ÿ˜ข we made up our own traditions, some of which we still keep!

When you really need the 'village'
Well, just to top off an otherwise horribly busy week - now my son has caught some sort of virus...just before the holidays too! Who could have guessed? ๐Ÿซฃ At least I don't feel totally alone: I found out on the parent WhatsApp group that out of a class of approx 22 kids, only 8 turned up today for their Christmas concert - everyone has caught this thing! I can certainly tell you though, that when you're child is sick and you have to work, this is when you really appreciate the 'village' - if any - that you have. In my case, his nonno and nonna! Any memories of needing the 'village'? Or maybe providing one? Would love to hear your stories.

@Maria White Unfortunately, we lived too far away from i nonni to really benefit. In my expat life, I never lived close to family, so if the children were unwell, it was all on me. That was always one of the hardest parts of being an expat who moves a lot. We moved, on average, every two and a half years, so we were constantly arriving in a new village and having to build a support network as best we could each time. ๐Ÿ˜ซ
