gainstaging a synth irl: noise or clipping, my choice
I have an old original uno synth that i'd like to play around with but I can't get a decent signal from it. Cabling types are my enemy here, I think, maybe. The uno's out is 1/8 phones like it thinks its a walkman. I want it to go through a kaoss fx module, which uses rca. sigh. Straight into the yamaha mixer (via 1/4") and its too quiet. no problem, I think, crank the gain. Hum galore. ok, there's a bbe 282 maximizer available, maybe use that (1/4" patch i/o), then to the mixer (same 1/4" in). nooo.. now I can turn off the gain but I get clipping. eew. no. it has no volume or gain to adjust. the clipping sounds digital too, which doesn't make sense. I now just tried the second to last option. a behringer fx 2000; its got a compressor-maximizer preset. this is the best i've gotten but the noise is probably only reduced by a third this way. The very last option is an old art tube pre. I don't like this option because its... busy already. Somebody please tell me using a headphone amp is the dumbest thing in the world before I try it;p All this should be signal level but I'm getting noise going from phones to anything. I even have an 1/8" phones to xlr to go straight to the yamaha, eliminating any rca in the path. This isn't much better either. Any thoughts? Options, to review: Uno Synth, 1/8 out behringer fx2000 multi fx, 1/4 and xlr i/o bbe 282iq, 1/4 i/o korg kaoss fx, rca i/o art dps II preamp, 1/4 and xlr yamaha 12xu, xlr, 1/4, rca

MIDI and audio are not the same thing. MIDI is the digital communication standard between digital devices whereas some devices have internal electronics to take the MIDI data, process things and produce an audio output. WD-40 now has a cleaner called Specialist Contact Cleaner readily available at Home Depot, hardware stores, Amazon, etc. It does a good job on connectors when you spray them and cycle the mating connector a number of times. I'm not sure what your output signals are but it could also be a mismatch of impedances, older devices with newer. Can you post a picture showing the back side connections of each of your devices?

@Brian M Got it. I was thinking MIDI would let you do all the stuff you wanted to do and then bring it into something modern that has the kind of audio output you get line level signals with to go into your interface. Are you able to put headphones on the two units and hear good audio?
Mixing mastering feedback please
Hi just hoping to get feedback on this mix. I’m not sure if I should mention some of the aspects about it so I’ll talk about that after you can hear where it is now. Many thanks in advance

My comment is too much reverberation in the mix, and the instruments are background to the vocal. It's missing depth. The frequency balance doesn't come through. I would like to hear this mix without any effects so we can all assist in getting it sounding its best.
Sync Licensing Question
Hey guys, I got an email saying it is from Spirit Music Group and a song of mine has been selected for a Netflix feature film. I first felt it was a scam however I submitted a brief questionaire which didn't ask any questions I felt could be used to scam me. Tonight I received a contract which looks legit however under one section titled "Administration Fee" it states "to secure and facilitate the guaranteed placement the artist agrees to pay a one-time, upfront, fully refundable administration fee". Is this a common practice? Unfortunately the Spirit Music Group website has no contact submission or I would ask them directly. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

Groove compression for a fast pace beat
Hey, guys. I'm mixing a beat that 137 BPM. It's a fast paced R&B beat. I know I need a slow attack and fast release on time with the tempo, but since the drums are closer together and there're more in each bar, I would want the quickest of the slow attacks with the fastest release, right?

It's all about the sound you want whether it is a snap, punch, thump, soft attack, sustained body, tail off, etc. watching the needles is good advice. Just keep in mind that keeping the initial transient attack probably has the most noticeable change to the sound for dynamics and punch. It's all about the milliseconds under your control. The body of the waveform gives what I would call character and presence. If the compressor your using doesn't quite get you where you want, consider transient shapers as another means. Check out a Mastering the Mix article on "Best Compression Settings for a Punchy Mix"
Transitioning to another PC and Quirks
Hello, all! I have been away from this forum and mixing in particular for various reasons. one of them was moving my music related files, programs and plugins to a new PC. While most of this was easier than I thought, some quirks popped up. 1: Downloading installation files. Should all these files be in a specific folder. If yes, where: on OS, E (SSD) or D (regular drive)? 2: Extracting files: same as above? 3: Product Portals: s.a.? 4: VST3: should those files be in the same folder as the DAW (Studio One)? 5: DAW: on OS, E or D? I should say that right now everything works, but the files seem to be all over the place and I don't really favour that, but does it really matter? Next, and this is really bothering me: I have a few unfinished pieces and I use NEUTRON ELEMENTS with these songs. As it is, I am unable to install this EQ on the new PC. It does not even show up in the IZOTOPE Product Portal. I spent weeks with them to have this fixed. (I downloaded this plugin from Presonus a long time ago, when it was part of a Studio one offer) You may say: just use a different EQ, and I probably will. But it is the principle of not being able to retrieve the plugins that are mine, plus the headaches of communicating with IZOTOPE, who don't offer a real solution at this time. Now that they combined with NATIVE INSTRUMENTS , logging in has also become a major issue. I had to redo passwords for no apparent reason. I purchased OZON 10 from NI. While it is visible in their Product Portal, it does not show on IZOTOPE'S. It seems like a problem right now since they are busy transitioning. So I am wondering if you encountered similar issues and what do you suggest I should do in terms of file storing? Thanks for reading this lengthy array of words....🥴

Hi Klaus, being as how you have and SSD and a secondary drive, I'm assuming your OS is on the SSD, which is more common, so make sure it is on your D drive because Windows is faster loading from an SSD. Depending on how much storage is on the SSD, some find it ok to add applications on the same drive with the OS and keep their files and data assigned to the secondary drive. Usually, the plugin launchers will choose the main drive by default, but I and many others like to load them onto the secondary because I use a smaller capacity SSD (500 GB) and try to keep it mostly assigned for the OS. Definitely keep your music files on one drive to avoid storage of some parts on two different drives. It's ok to have your VST3 plugins on any drive and not necessarily with the DAW. There is no need for a specific folder to keep installation downloads. Many times, I just open and run the install file not bothering to save it into any specific folder and let the OS download folder get cluttered up in its own way. There is a zip folder that will store extractions but don't be too concerned making sure something has or hasn't made it there. BOTTOM LINE - YOU DON"T NEED TO SAVE ALL THAT CRAP. It gets too complicated trying to save everything as to how it might make sense. It just clutters up your storage somewhere else, plus the names in those folders are confusing anyway. You can always do a new download if you can't find the specific download application if you need it again. Just keep a written record of all your apps and licenses you have installed in case something craps out and you have to start all over again. For my Product Portals, I keep them on the desktop as an icon to launch as needed because they seem to constantly need updating when I have to open them up to do something. They usually download to the main drive, and I don't bother assigning them somewhere else. All the best
