YES....Clarity IS Kinder!!
Just wanted to hop on here and say how much I loved today's post "Clarity is Kinder than Niceness". This is SO true. Employees oftentimes just want a straight answer that they can rely upon. It doesn't have to produce warm fuzzies....but it must be direct, consistently fair, and not take a degree in rocket science to understand. Don't YOU want the truth when you ask a question? So does your team. Here's just one example of how we put this into practice. At Cornelius, we have conducted a salary survey every year for the last 5 years. Before coming here, when I wasn't a part of that process at other employers, I ALWAYS questioned the legitimacy of this process because it was shrouded in mystery and rarely resulted in any salary movement. Since coming here and being fully responsible for the whole process, I turned this into a learning opportunity and invited all employees to attend. I showed them exactly what kind of information we collect, who we get it from, and what exactly I do with it to reach my final recommendations. I invited them to schedule time with me if they wanted to individually review the data I received for their positions. I had so many employees give positive feedback afterwards. Inviting them into the process gave the clarity they needed to be able to trust the process.
Pay increases - want your input
Several people have posted about this, so I would like to get input from everyone. ⁉️How do you handle pay increases? Cost of living, merit, or combo? And are they tied to the performance review process?

Cost of living is something the board approves during our annual budget process, so, if one is approved (and that depending on economic factors), it goes into effect immediately upon the start of the new fiscal year. We also do have an annual review process (we run ours through ADP Workforce Now) for all employees. The score from the review determines the merit increase received, and that is issued 2 months into the new year.
INTRODUCTIONS & Announcements
I started the Badass Business Hub because I have been that department of one. And know that it can be overwhelming and isolating. But when we share ideas and support each other, HR gets a lot less scary. We are 65 members strong and have now closed out membership until January. Let’s kick things off — 👉 Introduce yourself in the comments! Tell us: ➡️What’s your current HR (or people-related role)? If it’s just one of your hats, let us know that. ➡️Share your organization and industry. ➡️How do you keep your sanity in your HR/people-related role? Next week on 11/13 at 10 a.m. EST, we will be online for a Hot Mess HR Roundtable to get to know each other and Q&A. Head over to the Calendar to add it to yours! Stay tuned tomorrow for a free resource! All of this (and more) is waiting in the Badass HR Hub — join the discussion 👇

I am the HR Director for Town of Cornelius. The town did not have HR until 2019, and I have been here as a dept of one since November of 2021. I love working in local government and seeing that same passion for service in my coworkers! What keeps me sane are opportunities just like this one to meet and hear from others who are "in the trenches" too. It's easy, on a crazy day, to think that NO ONE gets what this job is like, but that's not true...all of YOU have a similar "crazy day" story to share. Knowing that helps me keep on keepin' on😉

With 10 years of HR experience, my target goal every day is to actually BE that resource employees can rely on.
