Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making YouTube Thumbnails:
- Who is this video for? Write a 1-2 sentence description. - Why should they watch this video? In 1-2 sentences, outline the biggest benefits they'll receive. - Can the thumbnail evoke the emotion that viewers will feel while watching the video? - People see the thumbnail before the title. Whatโs the most interesting aspect of the video that will generate the highest level of intrigue in the largest audience (attention market, not just a niche)? - Does the thumbnail accurately represent the emotions or takeaways you want your audience to feel after watching the video? - Does the thumbnail target a specific viewer and compel them enough to choose your video over one from MrBeast or Alex Hormozi? - Are there elements in the thumbnail that would immediately appeal to your target audience? The goal is to attract high-intent leads, not just views. - How can you create intense curiosity using knowledge gaps, curiosity gaps, or by defying expectations? - Could this thumbnail also work as an auto DM banner image to catch the attention of your target viewer on X/Twitter? - Remove any unnecessary elements that donโt contribute to the core message. The thumbnail should be easily understood in 0.1 seconds by someone scrolling quickly. - Is there any text on the bottom right corner of the thumbnail? If so, remove it. - If there is text on the thumbnail, is it large and bold enough to be easily read on YouTube mobile? - Keep the text to a maximum of 3-4 words. More words increase the risk of losing the viewer's interest. - If thereโs a face in the thumbnail, it must either be highly recognizable or show an emotional expression that grabs attention.
