Personal Development in Portugal (updated thread)
It looks like migration is all about the nuts and bolts, which of course are important; the bureaucracy, the formalities, etc. A lot of my public-facing work is about that, here's a good example (navigating Portugal's financas portal). BUT, or AND - at least to me (and as you may have seen in my weekly Portugal Resident column) - this matter of moving country, is as much an 'inner game' as an outer pursuit. We can, if we wish, learn so much about ourselves too in this process and grow as human beings in the process. Portugal brings unique aspects to our 'unfolding' as well of course, see 'The Power of Não!' I have so much to share on this topic (to me it's not really a subject, it's what I am here on this planet and in Portugal to explore; it's a way of seeing the world), and this thread will include resources I have found useful, in no particular order or preference. Shares will include all sorts of links that will range from the deeply spiritual through to the more materialistc life-hacks and insights, like Dan Koe and Fraya Mortensen, attached today. Let me know if this chimes with you, and please share your inspiration here too...

@Carl Munson Well…um (cheeks reddening with embarrassment) since we are smack-dab in the middle of the joy of visa renewal, I have replaced any and all “educational” or “personal development” media with complete and total escapism. So if there’s a super hero, vampire, fairy princess, witch or wizard or magical speaking dog in it, then I’m totally in. A little brain vacation if you will. Because all of the other working parts of my brain (both conscious and unconscious) are currently being occupied with a litany of Portuguese acronyms, Certidaos, “my desk, my way-isms” and new and unexpected visa surprises hourly. But I welcome it wholeheartedly. I wouldn’t trade any of this for anywhere else. I remind myself that it’s just a game and to have fun with it. Like a card game that you buy the expansion pack for. I just bought the “visa renewal expansion pack” so I’m learning the tricks and skills to be a master at this new level.

Greg and I are ready and loved watching the intro video last night! Happy birthday Carl!!! 🥰🎂
Wednesday, Quarta, 2nd July, 2025: Let's start learning (more) Portuguese on my birthday!
"Olá bom dia ALEGRIA! Tudo bem?" How old are you? Yes, I did just ask you how old you are; "Quantos anos tem?", em Português. The reason for my impertinence is that I'll be 60 on Monday, 7th July, which as birthdays can do, has prompted questions, reflections and considerations about what has been, what comes next, and what to do with my community of fellow life travellers, here in Portugal. For me, this chronological 'marker', which on one level is just another day, yet is also a profound milestone, has me asking HOW I want to be as I go into what can be seen as the second half, last third, or in reality - who knows how long? What I do know, is that I feel hard-wired to serve, support and share the enjoyment of life in Portugal with others, who are in their own way making a fulfilling new life here, loving this country's culture and making a positive impact as we go. This I will continue to do. And in doing so make this community a more obvious and focused place for that flavour and quality, with others who are moved and inspired to do the same. Practically, my big birthday is prompting some particular themes, namely: more purposefully learning the Portuguese language, investing in my health, wellbeing and fitness, as well as continuing to live my life in Portugal with an emphasis on *fun, friendship and fulfilment*. If this appeals to and resonates with you, you are in the right place! And please share this message and mission with others who might like to join us. You can share this link with them, and get a nice little bit of monthly income too 😉 Recently, I have had the good fortune to now be able to share @Maria Malheiro's '30-DAY EUROPEAN PORTUGUESE CHALLENGE - BEGINNERS' right here on this Portugal Club platform, and invite you to celebrate my birthday by starting the course with me from next Monday, 7th. Let's do it, "vamos embora!!!"

When I look at the technical definition, expat seems to be more transient or temporary (moving country to country) whereas immigrant is more permanent (I’m here forever now)
