3 Book Formatting Tools
Formatting your book doesn't have to be expensive. One of the questions I get asked the most is, "What should I use to format my book?" In this video, I break down the only 3 formatting tools I recommend depending on the type of book you're publishing—whether it's a journal, planner, coloring book, nonfiction book, or novel. Hopefully, this helps you choose the right tool and saves you both time and money on your publishing journey. ➡️ Let me know in the comments: Which formatting software are you currently using?

Helpful reminder that formatting doesn't have to be intimidating or expensive. The three tools covered prove you can do it yourself without hiring a pro. I use Canva for all my Activity Books - it's straightforward, cost-effective, and gets the job done well.
Why I Publish Books Instead of Relying on My Job Only
Today I spent another four hours commuting to and from my full-time job. I'm grateful for my career, but that commute reminded me why I'm so passionate about self-publishing. Companies change. Policies change. Life changes. The one thing I can control is building assets that I own. Every book I publish becomes something that has the potential to keep helping readers and generating income long after it's written. That's why I'm investing more of my time into publishing instead of relying on my career alone. I'm not trying to escape my job. I'm trying to create more options for my family's future. If you've been putting off writing your first book—or you've already published one but haven't fully committed to growing it—let this be your reminder that every book is another asset you're building for yourself. 👇What motivates you to publish? Is it extra income, sharing your knowledge, building your business, leaving a legacy, or something else? I'd love to hear your reason in the comments.

@Krista Brea, Thank you for sharing this video, it really hits home. That four-hour commute is no joke, and I think so many of us can relate to that feeling of watching time slip away and realizing we need to build something that's truly ours. Your perspective on creating assets you own, rather than just trading hours for dollars, is exactly what more people need to hear. What motivates me to publish is the freedom to create something once and have it keep working for me over time. I started with activity books on Amazon KDP, and honestly, it's been one of the most accessible ways to get into publishing without needing to be a professional writer or designer. The beauty of activity books is that they're evergreen. Kids always need new puzzles. Adults always want relaxing coloring pages or brain challenges. These niches don't disappear—they evolve, but the demand stays steady. Some of the activity books I've worked on include: - Word search books (themed for kids and adults) - Maze puzzle books with varying difficulty levels - Coloring pages (mandalas, nature, quotes, seasonal themes) - Sudoku and logic puzzle books - Dot-to-dot books for young learners - Word scramble and crossword collections - Spot the difference puzzle books - Trivia and quiz books I have developed my own Creator Tools to make the process so much easier. Once you create the first template, you can easily spin off multiple variations by changing themes, age groups, or difficulty levels, and that's what makes this model so sustainable. You're never starting from zero every time. Beyond Amazon KDP, I also sell these on Etsy and Teachers Pay Teachers, where teachers and parents are actively searching for engaging, ready-to-use materials. After the initial promotions, these products continue to generate passive income month after month, year after year. It's not about escaping a job. It's exactly what you said: creating options. Options for time, for family, for peace of mind. Publishing gives me that hope.

📚 Let's Have Some Fun! GIF Challenge
Sometimes it's hard to explain your book in a sentence... but what if you had to explain it with a GIF? 😆 Drop a GIF in the comments that represents what your book is about (or the book you're currently working on). Examples: ❤️ Relationship book → A couple hugging, arguing, or reconnecting 💰 Personal finance book → Money raining from the sky 🐶 Dog training book → A dog doing something hilarious 🚀 Business book → Someone launching into space 📖 Self-help book → A dramatic transformation GIF No titles. No descriptions. Just the GIF. Let's see if the community can guess what your book is about based on the GIF alone! 👀

📚 New Printing Option on KDP
Amazon KDP has introduced a new paper type called Groundwood Paper, giving authors another option when publishing black-and-white books. One of the biggest benefits? Lower printing costs. For example, a 6x9 black-and-white paperback with approximately 150 pages currently has a printing cost of around $2.80. Switching to Groundwood Paper brings that down to approximately $2.71. Now, I know what you're thinking... "Krista, that's only 9 cents." And you're right. But if you sell 100 copies, that's an extra $9 in your pocket. Sell 1,000 copies and that's $90. Sell 10,000 copies and now we're talking about real money. Small improvements to your royalty margins can add up significantly over time. Groundwood paper also offers a more traditional book feel that readers are accustomed to seeing in many mass-market paperbacks. That said, every publishing decision comes with trade-offs. You'll want to consider whether the paper quality and appearance align with your brand and reader expectations before making any changes to existing books. 🤔 I'm curious... Will you be updating any of your existing books to use Groundwood Paper? Or will you only use it for future projects? Drop your thoughts below!

@Krista Brea , This is a great option for many books, especially fiction, nonfiction, and other text-heavy publications where the lower printing cost can add up over time. 😊 One thing to consider, however, is whether it's the best fit for activity books. For coloring books, puzzle books, and similar products, some users may experience issues such as marker bleed-through, ink spreading or colored markers showing through to the next page. Water-based markers may also wrinkle the paper. Another factor is that groundwood paper contains lignin, which can cause pages to yellow and deteriorate more quickly over time compared to higher-quality paper stocks. For text-based books, the savings may be well worth it. For activity books, it might be worth ordering a proof copy first and testing it with the types of pens and markers your audience is likely to use. 💡
