A lot of people talk about latency as something that must be pushed to the absolute minimum—and I get why. But keep in mind that we, as humans, also have latency. We need time to process information, decode it, reason about it, and then respond during a conversation. That’s why, instead of aggressively minimizing latency at the cost of AI reasoning quality, we should focus on making interactions feel more natural. One approach I’m exploring is allowing the model to insert brief conversational cues—like uhm, emm, ugh, let me think about it or similar fillers—either before a tool call or right after receiving information. Just like humans do, these moments signal thinking, not failure.
