Thanks for your confidence in me Jake
Hey Everyone. Just wanted to share something positive with you all. The other evening I had a 1 on 1 with Jake. The aim was to look at my practicing and how I may improve. This was relevant for a couple of reasons. First I seemed to have hit a plateau and secondly some 'stuff' happened that rocked my confidence. WOW! This was just what I needed. Jake instantly put me at ease. He provided hints, tips and the confidence I needed but was not getting from other players around me. Only a couple of days later and I'm already experiencing improvement in my practicing on songs I was struggling with (and need gig ready for 6 December! So if you are wondering "should I or shouldn't I" then stop wondering and do it. Get involved with Jake. If my experience is anything to go by then you'll certainly see progress to your playing. Thanks Jake.😀 Adrian Wakefield, England.
Besides guitar what's your other big hobby/passion?
If a guitar isn't in your hands what are you doing? No work doesn't count 😆 I guarantee a few of us have similar hobbies and passions. Share them down below. As always... I'll go first. For me it's cooking 🥘 I used to hate it and never do it. But I realized I had to eat everyday and decided to learn to make at least a few thing... Turned out once I got going it was really fun!

If I’m not getting frustrated with my guitar playing I’ll get frustrated on the golf course! However, I can really lose myself with little to no frustration when I have my camera in my hand looking for that perfect landscape shot.
When Did You Know Guitar Was YOUR Instrument?
Think back—what was the moment you knew you needed to learn guitar? Maybe it was a song, a live performance, or the first time you picked one up. Drop your story in the comments below. Sharing your "aha!" moment could inspire someone else to start or keep going on their journey! I’ll start: It was middle school orchestra - when I started playing bass. I even remember my first note it was as a “D” 😆

I've been drawn to music since I was at High School. Sadly, I had to do 'proper exams' and get a 'proper job'. In my middle age I got to grade 4 music and playing (Keyboard) but then life got in the way again. When Covid lockdowns arrived I got a cheap guitar to while away the boredom. Shortly after Covid I retired (almost 2 years gone now) and it was natural to continue and expand my playing. I progressed to an Epiphone Slash J45 and Alvarez Laureate OM (plus a Tanglewood to throw in the car when travelling). I don't want to get hooked on exams again but I am hooked and happy playing and doing some theory. The nice thing is I was able to tell my 90-odd year old high school music teacher who I 'brushed by' on Facebook. He was truly touched I had kept the faith because he said he saw potential in me and was saddened when I had to do 'proper exams'. (I shed a tear). I failed the proper exams but eventually did alright for myself in life though I often wonder how I would have done in other choices and with music permanently in my life. And now I have all of you on my journey :-)!
Hey it’s Jake. Upcoming PURGE. Watch this Loom.
Reply with one of these KEYWORDs to stay in the community: ==> “ONE ON ONE” - you want more information on how you can get 1-on-1 help with me. ==> “GO PRO” - you want to schedule a call with an instructor to help you get started on guitar and learn more about what we do here at Guitar Gym. ==> “NO MONEY” - I’m focusing on free training right now, but I’m active. Also, let me know how we can help you succeed. Thanks!

To Leave or Not to Leave that is the question
Hi All. I wonder if I may canvass your opinions please? I've been a member of a community band (I won't say where - other than it's in the UK) or its name to retain some confidentiality) for about 2 years. Originally it was run by a pro guitarist and, during his time this it was a happy place - run informally with mutual respect and help. If a member got out of line then quietly and discreetly the Pro suggested that 'maybe it was time he/she set up his/her own band'. The member then had a choice of how to go forward. The sound desk was a balanced mix as was the playing levels of everyone coming (beginners, intermediates etc.). The Pro chose to give it up (along with another community gathering) to do his own thing which is fine and everyone wishes him success. Currently there are no minors in the band. Now the 'band' is run by committee who has introduced a constitution, accounts, membership rules and a code of conduct. All members are being asked to(if not required) to sign the Code of Conduct. If any one 'slips' then he/she is reported to an 'overseer' for disciplinary action which can include written or verbal warnings, suspension or 'dismissal'! I get the need for a constitution and accounts but imposing rules and a code of conduct (when there has not been any issue that I am aware of during the past years) seems overkill. If we choose not to sign it then 'we' will be deemed to accept it by continuing to turn up and be subject to the rules. The Code of Conduct includes such statements as: I will involve myself in the work of the band and accept my fair share of responsibilities, I will attend rehearsal and concerts, arrive at the agreed time, practise outside of rehearsals If I am unable to attend a concert or rehearsal, or expect to be late, I will let someone know as soon as possible I will take musical direction and positively face any challenges thrown at me ... and more What was once a happy place relaxed environment with no issues is now mired in, what feels like, authoritarianism. As for the music, well that is now 'drowned' by keys, drums, bass, electric guitar, and singers. 'Strummers' (that includes me) are not 'encouraged' to plug in (either to a central desk or their own amps) and their playing is drowned out (save for one who plugs in and controls the mixing desk). Our performance quality has also dropped. Different levels of player are not encouraged (though the committee says they do); songs are not broken down and put back together in an arranged piece. Basically it's a case of just bang it out. Even a poor performance that's all over the place is described as 'tight'.

@Deborah Zettlemoyer Thanks Deborah. Kind words and thoughtful. I'm leaning towards leaving but not making a snap decision just yet. It's not me being indecisive it's me pausing to make sure I make the right decision. When I decide to leave (anywhere) I don't look back.

Update - I chose to ‘temporarily’ leave the group saying that as I would not be playing in the Christmas gig I am taking a time out but that I remain excited about their plans for 2025. That leaves the door ajar should I choose to return. My decision generated an unexpected outpouring of love for me and I was deeply touched. However, two people who I regarded as friends responded to me direct by saying ‘Why don’t you just !!!! off’! I didn’t see that sucker punch coming! I'm ok despite this - music (and true music brethren) transcends all.

I’m a retired professional who took up the guitar during Covid and who is now a certified guitar addict! I’m mainly a strummer but want to pick also.
