If you haven't already, definitely consider the Mastering.com membership (not the same as TRE). You get one "monthly check-in" plus a ton of premium courses for about $30 a month.
🎧 Achieving Pro Sound in Your Tracks 🎧
Hey fam! What’s the one thing you do to make sure your music hits that professional level? Whether it's mixing, mastering, or production tricks, I’d love to hear what works for you! Let’s share some knowledge! 🔥🎶

Jason hit it right on the nose - it's about building a great process. Throw a michelin star chef in any standard kitchen (no special ingredients or tools) and they'll churn out better mac n cheese than your mom. The best "trick" I've found is referencing everything. I'll use AI stem splits or professional multitracks and then try to get each element in my mix as close as possible to the reference. Especially vocals. Once I feel like I've got "it," I save the processing chain and boom my process just got that much better 🙌
Achieving Pro Quality: What’s Your Secret Sauce? 🎧🎶

Like Jason, my go-to sauce is showing up as much as possible. But since you asked for a "secret" sauce, here it is - clipping. I follow a modified version of the clip-to-zero method as outlined by Baphometrix. There is a great series on YouTube outlining it. It's been a legit game changer for getting my mixes to pop.
Asking for help: Does anyone want a free master?
Admins, please remove this post (or DM me to remove it) if it's not allowed. I've completed the Mastering training in The Reverse Engineer a while back and got the thumbs up from Caleb, Dane, and Jake after they reviewed an album I mastered to move on to the Mixing training. I've decided to really start promoting my mastering services to the public while I continue to work on the mixing training. After a quick review of where I'm at with Jake, I need some more songs in my portfolio that aren't course material. So, this is where you come in. Do you have a good stereo mix in the rock / pop genres that I can make really stand out for you? Even if you've already mastered and released it, that's fine. I would just re-master your mix, and I'll do it for free. My ask back in return would be that if you like the master I did, that you write me a quick testimonial for my website and give me permission to put the before and after example audio on my website. Don't worry, I'd never release anything. It would be for example purposes only to get future work. If you want some social proof, just ask @Timothy Shay as I've done a master for him that he was happy with. My website is a work in progress, thus the reason for my post. For those of you who have been using AI mastering services, I'd be happy to go head to head against it and deliver something that sounds better. If you're interested and you have a good mix that you are proud of, shoot me a DM here on Skool (or comment and I'll get in touch with you). If for some reason your mix isn't ideal to be mastered, I'll tell you why so you can go back and make the adjustments. Thanks for your help. 🙂

Producers, take this man up! A few months ago I was curious to hear how AI mastering stacked up against a REAL master so I hosted a competition in the forum. Little did I know this little experiment would completely transform the way I mix. Not only was Brian's master leagues better, he also pinpointed a crucial mix imbalance that me & Mr. AI missed haha. Yeah we can get feedback from other producers on sites like this but it just isn't the same as getting finely tuned "mastering" ears on your song. Humans for the win.
DIY vs Paid Mastering
To those of you who have paid for mastering before, was it worth it? More specifically, did your mix improve much beyond what you could have achieved on your own with basic saturation, clipping, limiting, and/or Ozone? If yes, could you share your source with me? Asking for a friend ;)

@Brian Couture AI doesn't hold a candle to an experienced human, that's for sure! I gotta say this whole experience has totally leveled up my ears, mixing, and appreciation/respect for mastering engineers. "I was blind but now I see." As for the contest, it's back ON

@Jason Tufts I love and highly resonate with you Jason. That's actually what prompted me to ask the question in the first place - "if we perfect our mixing craft, is mastering even necessary." But after engaging with 2 human mastering engineers on here, it is 110% clear to me that they are indeed worth it. As much as I love to have full control over the entire song creation process, it sure is lovely to get something back that sounds even better than what I heard in my head. Of course, the process will always be the ultimate reward for me and I'll continue to get better at every stage of the craft. But from here on out, I will absolutely hire a real human mastering engineer for songs I plan to release to the public.
