I spend time getting the balance right on the basics—like EQing instruments to make sure they’re not fighting each other for space. Also, I can’t stress how important it is to reference tracks you respect. Listening to a well-mixed track in the same genre can help fine-tune your decisions on balance and clarity. For mastering, I’ll always get a fresh set of ears to listen, too—whether it's a pro mastering engineer or just a trusted friend. After that, I usually run things through some analog gear (if I have access) to get that warmth.
