Think of vs. Think about
What do you guys think of the following take? What do you notice about these examples? 1. Instantly, I thought of a great idea. Then I thought about it for a while. 2. He finally thought of what to make for dinner. Now he's thinking about how to cook it. 3. She thought of a question during the meeting. But she needed time to think about the answer. 4. He had been thonking about the problem for weeks. Then he thought of a solution. 5. I've been thinking about what to call my new dog. Can you think of a good name? 6. I've been thinking about what to say. But I can't think of the right words. Conclusions: Think of - the moment an idea or image appears. Think about - spending time considering something. I thought of the solution (It came to me). I thought about the solution (I spend time considering it). She thought of me while she was shopping (She recalled me, or was reminded of me, at some moment). She thought about me while she was shopping (Her mental attention was focused on me for some time period). A final detail - these are often used in the same situation: What do you think of the movie? (What's your general opinion - your quick reaction?) What do you think about the movie? (You're being asked to consider it more carefully or discuss it.) My main point: small moments of clarity can help you recognize English in English, instead of translating it. Let me know what you think of/about it.
