Eric Bowman Master Copy Start
Chris suggested I try a master copy of one of my favorite artists so here is the start of Eric's painting 'This Land Is Your Land'. His original is 40x40 and mine is half that size. Acrylic burnt sienna wash, ultramarine blue and burnt umber oil with turpentine for the shadow lay in.

So cool! Awesome! This image has very clear staging derived from camera placement, tonal composition and shape design. You have tapped into something fundamental in this master copy. In my opinion you are mapping the fundamental forces of the cosmos! I see spiral paths travelled by the eye within the image, waves and ripples, grids and lattice structures, branching points and a main attractor (focal point) provided by the main protagonists. All of these forms co-exist and reinforce each other within this image. You are painting the fundamental forces of the invisible field, the substrate of reality. You have tapped into the source of all creation!

@Natasza Zurek Yes, that IS precisely what I am saying. :-) But all jokes aside, I believe the LHC is a precision instrument which uses large amounts of energy to analyse this invisible microscopic field. Whereas all we need do as artists using our artistic intuition is to channel our insights to access this very same field. There is one significant difference, between approaches, however. The LHC was built upon the assumption that the cosmos is made from particles. As artists I believe we know reality itself is built from a deeper field of patterns which we interpret as meaning, and only later see "as things". This is my own personal interpretation, of course. And it is something I am only now attempting to express using my comic narratives. Thank you for sharing your latest illustration! :-)
Question about starting with the head in figure drawing.
Just finished watching week 3 lessons on the head for the figure drawing fundamentals module. I’m curious about the technique. How much of it is Loomis? Would it be beneficial for me to study Loomis and use his book as a reference? Thanks.

It depends. You could keep things as simple as possible and not worry about studying outside the curriculum Chris has prepared. The West Coast Atelier curriculum he has prepared is entirely self-contained. Things may get confusing trying to insert other influences. Having said this, many similar drawing concepts are contained within the Loomis texts. I think of Loomis as a cousin to Legaspi, and Huston and Watts. The end goal is the same, drawing mastery. But the route taken is slightly different. Studying Loomis is always beneficial, but how much it improves your understanding of the Legaspi curriculum in such a short time frame may be negligible. Using Loomis as a reference and taking the time to digest concepts will always be beneficial, because much of the content of his books is timeless. Looking forward to seeing your latest stuff! :-)
Lara Croft
Life's responsibilities have increased significantly for me over the last few days and I will not have time to post much at all. 😭 But hope remains! I am in the process of setting up a larger drawing desk in my studio space so I may resume the practice of drawing with my arm every day, in combination with my typical digital approach which relies more on wrist movement. 😀 In the meantime, here is a Lara Croft study I made from photo reference of the actress Alicia Vikander. I am not seeking crit on these, so I have not provided the reference, I am just sharing my current process. The figure drawing process imagery shown here represents a fairly typical approach for me, using as it does a constructive approach to the figure inherited from Loomis, albeit in a comic character illustration rather than a realistic figure drawing. I wonder if you can spot the additional influence of Steve Huston. You guessed correctly. I started each figure sketch with three (s - curve) lines. A centre line and two other gestural lines to indicate the width of the torso and to show the action or story of the pose. Which colour combination is your favourite? All the best with your daily practice everyone. :-)

@Jonathan Musso Thank you for commenting. Yeah, simple is best.

@Janet Abrahams Thank you for commenting. Yes! Gotta love rust! It is reminiscent of raw umber underpaintings or brunaille. :-)
Updated leyendecker study
I worked on it for more 2 hours and learned alot.I feel like the highlight in hair should be toned down / made darker. It can still use alot of work but I am going to move on to another master study. Let me know whether I should work on it more or not. P.S - All this guy does is paint shapes and values. It's crazy how his shapes have gesture and he uses them to move the eye.

So cool! Excellent study! :-)

Wow. This is really hard. I cannot even stay within the confines of the page 😂 I guess I will have to grind until it clicks.

Cool! It will click in time. Sometimes I use the following strategies: Draw a bounding box that encloses the entire pose and only draw inside of it which will provide a net to capture the pose within. (with a life model or photo ref) Divide the pose into sections using head lengths which will provide a proportional guide, by measuring with a pencil visually. (with a life model or photo ref) Use a viewfinder (with a life model). Alternative strategy: memorise the Loomis mannikin until proportion becomes second nature, then use this memorised proportional guide to draw and refine as you go. These drawings are solid in my opinion, even with some proportional exaggeration. :-)
