Why your smartest clients get the worst results
I'll never forget the look on his face. My first ever business coaching client had just gone from making £1,000 a month to £160,000 in annual revenue. I was in shock too. Not because the strategy worked… I knew it would. I was shocked because he actually DID what I told him to do And that's the dirty little secret no one talks about in the coaching industry... Most clients don't implement a bloody thing! They’re too smart for their own good, they overthink things, and it stops them taking action. For example: When I was starting out, the hardest lesson wasn't what to teach clients. It was how to get them to actually DO what I taught them. See, most people collect information like they're building a library they'll never read. It's not about how much information you give clients… It's about implementation. I call it the "minimum effective dose" – what's the smallest thing I can get you to implement that will give you the biggest result? Early on, I was trying to do that with the carrot and not the stick. ie. just being nice and encouraging them. It doesn't work. Now I'm much more direct: "Look, what's your biggest problem? OK, let's solve it. But you're going to do what I tell you to do and you have to commit to doing it. If you're not going to do it, then there's no point me telling you to do it." Harsh? Maybe. Effective? Absolutely. The more systematised you make it, the easier it is for clients to get results. But they still have to take ownership and personal responsibility. It's a balancing act. Most people are their own worst enemy… you have to help them get out of their own way and hold them accountable. "You said you were going to do this. You haven't done it. What's going on?" They'll always have excuses. And it's about challenging them on those excuses. People don't like being held accountable, which is precisely why they don't get results. So here's my question to you: Are you being tough enough with your clients? Not mean or rude…
