🎶 NEW RELEASE — OUR FIRST CORDA VIVA EP IS OUT NOW 🌞🥰🎶 🎶
https://open.spotify.com/album/3EAQVZK916wlak00xD9Clj?si=NOn_zv2jTPG0qOEWt-JCeQ&utm_source=copy-link Rui Salgado, Jim Monneau and I are very happy to share our first Corda Viva EP with you 🔥 🎶 Corda Viva is our international music project, bringing together traditional Brazilian choro, jazz and improvised chamber music. We are inspired by the beautiful melodies of Brazilian choro: music that grew from European musical forms brought to Brazil and developed there under the influence of local rhythms, phrasing and musical expression. Our shared jazz background, combined with my classical life in the opera, makes this a very natural and exciting musical mix. I already knew Jim from the jazz department at the conservatory, and Corda Viva brought us together musically for the first time. The idea for Corda Viva grew out of an inspiring conversation between Rui and me after a jazz concert by our New York friend Roni Ben-Hur. Over a drink afterwards, we started talking about our musical backgrounds, and the idea arose to explore this musical territory together. The connection was immediate, and it did not take long before we decided to go into the studio. This first EP is the result of that musical encounter. With violin, mandolin and double bass, we create our own Brazilian Choro Chamber Jazz: a meeting of beautiful Brazilian themes, classical refinement, energetic rhythms and spontaneous improvisation. Yesterday, we performed this repertoire, together with even more music, live at Art Base in Brussels, with double bassist Wim Ramon, with whom we will perform again in Ghent on 9 February. More details will follow soon. The EP features three pieces: ✨ Migalhas de Amor ✨ Um Choro Pro Waldir ✨ Inclemencia Now available on Spotify. ❤️🎻 Enjoy listening! Muchas gracias, Octavio. 🎻✨

Next Technique course 9 PM – Monday 13 July Prochaine cours technique – Lundi 13 juillet 20h
In our next lesson, we’ll continue with the second and third solo by Jean-Luc Ponty on Armando’s Rhumba. https://www-fallback.instagram.com/raphael.maillet/reel/DaDiHLZOshp/ We’ll go deeper into the violin technique behind these solos: arpeggios across the four strings, string crossings, choice of bowings and bow changes, fingerings, positions, articulation, and phrasing. I will also share a few small but very effective open-string exercises that dramatically improve the coordination of string crossings and bow changes. They are simple to practise, but they can make a huge difference in your playing. The group lesson will be followed by short individual 1-to-1 coaching sessions of approximately 5 minutes per person, focused on violin technical issues. This part will not be public and will not be included in the replay. The recording will be stopped, and you are welcome to record your own personal coaching session if you wish. If you want, prepare your technical questions in advance so we can make the best possible use of your 1-to-1 coaching time. Looking forward to seeing you on Monday at 9:00 PM!
Armando's Rhumba for two violins, together with Raphaël Maillet
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DaDiHLZOshp/?igsh=b2xsbDVzdWlzOGFm On Thursday, Raphaël posted our double video, together with my score: my transcription of Armando’s Rhumba by Chick Corea, including Jean-Luc Ponty’s solo, which I transcribed entirely by ear. Meanwhile: more than 17000 views, 599 likes, 34 shares and 70 saves.😅😍 It was really nice that Raphaël wrote to me and asked if he could create a chop accompaniment for it. 🌞🌞🌞 For this transcription, I also added bowings and ghost-note bowings that really work in this fast tempo, while keeping the jazz sound alive. The theme is transcribed as well. I noticed that the rhythm is very often played differently, but Jean-Luc Ponty really plays it the way I play it here and the way I wrote it down. For me, transcribing remains one of the essential tools in jazz to expand your vocabulary: listening, searching, writing down, correcting, listening again… and really getting inside the language of a musician. 🙂🎻 See you on the 13th of july to work further on the violin technic of this solo. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DaDiHLZOshp/?igsh=b2xsbDVzdWlzOGFm
