Capoeira = Improvisation ?
🇺🇸 I know this seems totally unrelated to jazz violin, but I’ve been immersed in capoeira for three days because of my kids' workshop. It blends music, dance, and rhythm, where "fights" are just beautiful improvised dances. What strikes me most is that everyone smiles and has so much fun! The parallel with jazz is obvious to me: the *roda* is a physical jam session based on instant call-and-response and playful freedom within a strict rhythm. And you? Do you know capoeira, and can you connect it to improvisation?

Yes, I know the roda 🌞 but actually only since about four months. 😊 We are currently playing Brazilian choro with our trio, and what fascinates me is how close the tradition is to improvisation: choro evenings often start with an ensemble performance and continue as a roda, where musicians gather, listen, react, answer each other and create music in the moment. That is exactly what we are going to do here in Ghent on June 16: first a concert by friends playing rhe choro repertoire, and then a choro roda / jam moment. A beautiful example is Receita de Samba by Jacob do Bandolim. (We play it with our trio in the 9th of july in Brxl) Les Violons de Bruxelles also recorded it, (beautiful version wirh Tcha) and I find that very interesting: it is clearly rooted in Brazilian choro, but the virtuosity, string articulation and rhythmic drive can create a natural bridge with the world of gypsy jazz.
NEW COURSE OF VIOLIN TECHNIQUE FOR VIP MEMBERS
Hello everyone! In June, we are starting a brand new violin technique course with the fantastic Ann Vancoillie. She is an incredible classical player and Concertmaster at the Opera Orchestra. She also studied jazz a few years ago and holds a degree in jazz violin as well! The course will take place on Mondays (when I don't teach). If you are interested in joining the VIP group, or if you are already a VIP member, could you please fill out the survey to help us set the schedule? Which schedule do you prefer for Mondays?

The first violin technique lesson with you was a real pleasure! 😊 Our next lesson will be on Monday the 22nd, from 21:00 to 22:00. As requested by Eva, these classes will now focus entirely on violin technique. We will work on: 🎻 Technical violin studies 🎻 Scale systems and intonation 🎻 Left-hand frames and finger patterns 🎻 Position changes and shifting 🎻 Vibrato 🎻 Double stops, also as an interesting tool in jazz 🎻 Posture and relaxation 🎻 Bow changes and bow distribution 🎻 Bow control and articulation 🎻 Sound production and tone quality 🎻 Coordination between both hands 🎻 How to play faster: practical tricks and secrets We will continue working on my technical system: “Left-Hand Frames (Based on the A String – Transposable to the E, D and G Strings)A Practical Way of Thinking for Fast Reading and Analysing Musical Figures” We will also explore selected technical exercises, scale work, études and excerpts from the classical violin tradition, for example J.S. Bach and other pedagogical material, always with the goal of developing a solid and efficient violin technique that can serve any musical style, including jazz. During these one-hour technique lessons, there will always be room for interaction: questions, opening your microphone, trying things out on your violin, and receiving individual feedback whenever needed. For the next lesson, the camera setup will be improved so that the focus is more clearly on the bow and both hands, allowing everyone to follow the technical details more easily. We have also tested a different microphone, which will provide better sound quality, including for the backing tracks and accompaniments that I will be playing during the lesson. 🎻😊 Happy practising and see you on the 22nd!
Armando's Rumba – My Transcription of Jean-Luc Ponty's Solo 🎻
https://youtu.be/5pSlGN2B4BQ I recorded three different versions. The backing track was long enough to explore several approaches, and because it contains some variations throughout, it was interesting to play both the theme and the solo in different ways. In this piece, as @Eva Slongo asked in her last lesson, I focused a lot on ghost notes and continuous bowing. Especially the small rhythmic details and articulation are not easy at all with ghost notes, which makes it a real challenge, both musically and technically. In my first Violin Technique Lesson on Monday the 8th of june, (to keep the lessons in relation to Eva's lessons) I’ll work technically on a few passages from this solo ( both easier and more advanced ones ) together with scales and some technical exercises inspired by the piece and also other technical excercise with possibility to open the mics and try out technical issues. Have a great evening, and see you soon! 🎻🎶 You can also discover some of my violin techniques across different styles here: https://music.apple.com/be/song/jewish-wedding-song/1819914423?l=nl https://music.apple.com/be/song/hora-martisorului/1819914414?l=nl

Eva is now working on this standard at the Academy on Mondays, which is really interesting. I love this piece and Ponty's solo 🤩. And I will use parts of the solo in my technical lesson tomorrow 🌞.
Grappelli's solo on I can't Give you anything but love
Hi everyone, This afternoon, I also just recorded the transcription of Stéphane Grappelli’s solo on "I Can’t Give You Anything But Love", followed by a few licks from Tim Kliphuis. Tim is always very generous in sharing his ideas, and he has kindly given me permission to share and analyse some of his licks in my Jazz Line Lab, where I regularly post jazz vocabulary, transcriptions, harmonic analyses, and exercises in all 12 keys. See you on Monday for the Violin Technique Lesson here in Eva Slongo Academy. The lesson is accessible to members with a VIP subscription. Have a great weekend and happy practising! 🎻 https://youtu.be/p3mV2kfZxdg
