@Shane Peterson In my case, ice dams often damage the rain gutters—not just the eaves. Sometimes they even affect and break the wooden structures inside the eaves. This is a serious issue for a 60-year-old house like mine. To deal with this, I removed the snow stoppers on one side of the roof and let the snow slide down naturally to the ground when it accumulates. To make that work, I have a roof painter smooth and repaint that side every 3 year. However, I can’t do the same on the other side, because the snow would fall onto my neighbor’s property. The most effective way to prevent ice-dam damage to the eaves is to install roof heating cables(also known as heat tape or de-icing cables) along the eaves. The problem is the installation cost and higher electricity bills.🧐
