“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
—Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
The heart is the core of a man, the vessel, the cup. And the contents of the cup determine the contents of the pour. If the cup is clean, the pour is clean. If the cup is filled with truth, truth flows freely. If the cup is filled with corruption, corruption escapes the lips. This is the law—as within, so without; cause and effect; you reap what you sow.
Jesus affirmed this eternal principle:
“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things:
and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.”
—Matthew 12:35 (KJV)
Therefore the command of the Father is this:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence…”
Guard it.
Protect it.
Watch it constantly.
Clean it out.
Fill it intentionally.
Let nothing enter the cup except what belongs to righteousness.
The preceding verses explain how this is done:
Proverbs 4:20–22 (KJV):
“My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.”
By reading the Proverbs daily,
by speaking them aloud,
by hearing our own voice declare them,
by keeping our eyes upon them,
we place the Father’s truth inside the cup.
And soon enough, when we are called to speak,
we will pour out what we have put in—
the right words at the right time.
For Jesus said:
“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”
—Matthew 12:34 (KJV)
If we answer according to the Scriptures,
then the Scriptures fill our cup.
If we answer contrary to the Scriptures,
then something else fills the cup.
The mouth reveals the heart.
But keeping the heart diligent does not only mean
filling it with truth—
it also means keeping it away from wickedness.
The same chapter warns:
“Enter not into the path of the wicked,
and go not in the way of evil men.
Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.”
—Proverbs 4:14–15 (KJV)
This is part of keeping the heart.
To guard your heart is to guard your environment,
your company, your influences,
your conversations, your exposures, and your atmosphere.
People who argue, fight, gossip, stir drama, speak lies, walk crookedly—
go not in their way.
Do not walk with them.
Do not sit with them.
Do not linger with them.
Do not work with them.
Do not live with them if it can be avoided.
Do not consume their sayings or their narratives.
Why?
Because if you incline your ear to their sayings,
you place their words into your cup.
If Solomon commands:
“My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings…”
Then to incline our ear to the wicked
is to incline our ear to the opposite of wisdom.
And whatever enters the ear enters the heart.
Jesus said the same:
“If a man love me, he will keep my words.”
—John 14:23 (KJV)
To love Him is to treasure His sayings,
memorize His sayings,
speak His sayings,
and avoid the sayings of those who oppose Him.
Therefore:
To keep the heart diligent is also to keep the heart distant—
distant from wickedness, from wicked paths, from wicked speech, and from wicked influence.
The righteous must walk with the righteous—
or walk alone, if necessary—
until God the Father calls them,
and only then may they speak to the wicked
with His Spirit and His authority.
Proverbs continues:
“Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.”
—Proverbs 4:26 (KJV)
This is open-eye meditation:
being present, aware, deliberate, intentional,
observing the moment,
choosing righteousness step by step.
“Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.”
—Proverbs 4:25 (KJV)
Stay focused.
Do not drift.
Do not turn aside into foolishness.
Then comes the cleansing command:
“Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.”
—Proverbs 4:24 (KJV)
A froward mouth is a mouth that contradicts Scripture.
Perverse lips are lips that speak crookedly instead of straightly.
The way to silence such a mouth is to fill it with Scripture itself:
Speak the Word.
Hear the Word.
Keep the Word.
Let the Word fill the cup.
For earlier it says:
“Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.”
—Proverbs 4:13 (KJV)
Wisdom is your life.
Instruction is your life.
The law is your life.
The heart must guard them,
or the issues of life will flow in confusion.
The same diligence that keeps the Word within
must keep wickedness far away.
Thus Proverbs 4:23 is both shield and gate:
Guard what comes in.
Guard what goes out.
And your life will flow in righteousness.
