A lot of writers think they’re stuck because they “haven’t rewritten enough.”
But sometimes the problem isn’t effort, it’s that the story is being pulled in too many directions at once.
You rewrite chapter one.
Then chapter three stops fitting.
So you rewrite again.
And again.
At some point, rewriting becomes a way to avoid making a harder decision about what the story is actually about.
I’ve noticed that when writers feel more confused after a rewrite, it’s usually not a craft issue, it’s a clarity issue.
Has anyone else hit that point where rewriting stopped helping and started blurring the story instead?
