10 Things I’ll State About Me
Hi all! I’ve taken a couple of days to think about the questions but I am now ready to introduce myself!
  1. What’s your name?
Rosie or Rosie Mu depending on who you ask. Mu (Myou, not Moo) is my middle name but I think it goes nicely with Rosie and lots of my family use it. It’s also makes my name stand out which I have a bit of a reputation of doing.
2. Where are you from?
Welwyn Garden City although my dad is for Cornwall and I spend so much time there that it feels like home. In September, I’m moving there for 3 years and I have never been so excited! Both Hertfordshire and Cornwall have their pros and cons but I love them both.
3. Why do you write/want to write?
I’m sure this is a common answer but I write to tell stories that haven’t been told before or to retell stories in a new light. I am also passionate about making sure each character’s perspective is listened to which doesn’t always happen in real life and I think the person consuming the story needs can’t make a fair judgement on a character before you know more about them, similar to how you can’t judge a person you don’t know (most of the time, anyway!)
4. What’s your favourite story?
A bit of a rogue one (it’s not Rogue One) but I absolutely love the 2024 film We Live In Time, written by Nick Payne. Whenever I watch or read anything that has a heart wrenching story with glimmers of comedy or lightheartedness, I immediately fall in love with it. I am a lover of sad films but We Live In Time is more than a sad film, it is told in such a beautiful way that is constantly making the audience think about what they would do if they were in a similar situation. I am also a huge fan of non-chronology (as long as it is made clear) and We Live In Time is a fantastic example of this.
5. Who is your favourite fictional character?
Potentially a basic answer but Jo March from Little Women. This probably comes from an obsession I had with her when I was younger (I was convinced I was her) but I love how many layers her character has. She appears strong and confident but has such a sensitive heart and is still working out who she is. I think all the March sisters are so beautifully written and the many actors that have portrayed them on both stage and screen have each brought something new to the characters which is the sign of a well written story.
6. Favourite writer?
Phoebe Waller Bridge. Obsessed. She seems to know exactly the kind of stories that we are missing in mainstream media and writes them so effectively. Fleabag was a huge inspiration to me when I was attempting to write a one-woman play and her ability to portray her views through her writing whilst using the extremes of dark content and light humour is a phenomenal talent. On the complete opposite side of things, I also really love Bob Mortimer’s books. I have loved him as a comedian for ages but his books have made me love him even more. His writing style is hard to explain but I got immediately immersed in his books and I would absolutely love to write screenplays for them (I’m sure someone’s already working on that).
7. What world do you wish you’d come up with?
This is a bit of a tricky one as I only tend to be attracted to media that is set in the ‘real world’. I do adore scripts such as Love Actually where all the characters are somehow connected, I bet it’s so fun to figure that all out!
8. If you could change the ending to any existing story, what would it be (and why)?
One of my favourite films is A Good Person and I would change the ending so Daniel doesn’t die. I feel like so many films have so much death in them and sometimes for no reason. There is already quite a lot of death at the beginning of A Good Person so I thought Daniel’s death was unnessecary. If they wanted to show Alison being able to live without him then I probably would have written him to move to a residential home or even Alison moving away.
9. What would the story of your life be called?
Things To Do, Places To Go, People To See.
10. Where do you hope to get to with your writing? I have only turned one of my films into a physical product and it was a documentary so not too much script to have to write. So as a goal, I would just love to have the courage to organise turning one of my scripts into a physical film or play. I have lots of connections that could help me but it’s just having the confidence to trust that my script is good enough.
