Fishing in Ontario is one of the best ways to enjoy our outdoors—but before you hit the ice/water, it’s essential to understand the Ontario fishing regulations. These rules aren’t just paperwork; they protect fish populations, preserve habitats, and ensure great fishing for future generations.
📘 Why knowing the regulations is important:
- Species limits & seasons – Some fish can only be kept during specific times of the year.
- Size and catch limits – Keeping fish outside legal size or over the limit can result in fines.
- Zone-specific rules – Ontario is divided into Fisheries Management Zones (FMZs), each with its own regulations.
- Gear restrictions – Certain baits, hooks, and methods are regulated to protect ecosystems.
🚫 Not knowing the rules is not a valid excuse if you’re checked by conservation officers.
✅ Good news for beginners:
There is no course required to start fishing in Ontario.
🎟 What you need to fish legally:
- If you are 18–64 years old: An Outdoors Card A valid Ontario fishing licence (Sport or Conservation)
- If you are under 18 or 65+: no fishing licence required, but you must follow all regulations and carry ID to prove age if asked.
📱 Regulations are easy to access online or through the Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary—take a few minutes to review them before every season or trip. I’ve attached the link to it in this post.
