COPD is a difficult condition, not least because it is accompanied by physiological anxiety. This anxiety is not mental or emotional but a natural bodily response to impaired breathing.
Shortness of breath can feel life-threatening, as if death is imminent. The effort required to breathe also causes severe fatigue, often making everyday tasks difficult or impossible.
Many medications used to manage breathing can lead to additional health problems, and as a result, people with COPD frequently develop serious comorbidities.
Compounding this, medical literature and some GPs offer little that is positive or hopeful, which can contribute to feelings of hopelessness and depression.
Despite the seriousness of the condition and limited services and resources, many people live for years after diagnosis. The key issue is how to live well with COPD. Evidence shows that many do live well and reach a normal age.
This community is to provide practical tools and nformation needed to live well with COPD.
