Welcome, start here!
Again glad you are here and here are some housekeeping items… #1 - To kick things off, please, create a post to introduce yourself and please share an image of your work. #2 - One of things you will want to get a hang of is using the Search Bar at the top of the application window. As this private club grows and to save your time from scrolling through the entire discussion feeds, use the search bar to data mine for Keywords, so that those discussions threads will pop up in the search results window. #3 - I have some general house rules that I hope everyone can follow to ensure we make this a safe place for sharing, collaboration, and positivity: 1. Respect: All members must treat each other with respect. No personal attacks, no hate speech, no trolling, no bullying. 2. Professionalism: As this is a community for professionals, members should maintain a level of professionalism. 3. Confidentiality: What is shared in the group should stay in the group, unless explicit permission is given to share the information outside. 4. Stay on Topic: Posts and comments should be relevant to the discussion threads. Off-topic posts may be removed. If I need to create another discussion categories I will but remember this private club isn't all about those clicks-n-picks, we are focusing on the other things that doesn't get taught or discussed in this manner. 5. No Spam: While it's fine to share your work or your business, spam is not allowed. 6. Help Each Other: The purpose of the community is to support each other's growth and development in Urban Sketching, and drawing. Members are encouraged to help each other out by sharing insights, experiences, and constructive feedback. 7. Quality Over Quantity: Encourage meaningful and thoughtful conversation over frequent, less substantial posts. 8. Ask for Help: If members are unsure whether something is appropriate to post, they should feel free to reach out to the admin or moderator for guidance. 9. Reporting Violations: If members see someone else breaking the rules, they should not engage but rather report the violation to the admin or moderator. 10. Disclaimer: The views expressed within the community are those of the individual members and do not necessarily represent or reflect the views of the community as a whole. We get it, but be mindful when sharing and receiving information.

guide me how to sketch like you did it from scratch!
Hi everyone! I'm a complete beginner and want to start sketching. Should I start with practicing straight lines and basic shapes, or just draw freely? What's the first thing you'd recommend a total newbie to focus on? Any tips are appreciated!
Favourite Sketching Tools (Pen/Pencil)
What's your favourite sketching tool? Is it a pen, or a pencil. Tell me in the comments below. I was taught with a pencil so it's often been my favourite tool to use until recently. In the last couple of years I've transitioned to using a ballpoint pen. This is not a fancy art pen, this is a regular Parker black medium ball point pin. The ink is beautiful, smooth, flowing black ink. Let me also makes a nice black pen. I've tried a fine balpoint, and I've tried a broad ball point, but I come back to the medium. Also, a Parker ballpoint refill is easy to get in lots of places, the cartridges last ages before they run out, and they are a standard replacement cartridge meaning that you can use these cartridges in lots of different pens. I used to only sketch with a pencil, and my favourite pencil is a soft mechanical clutch pencil. I've got one which is a 4B and a 3 mm lead which is quite thick. I used to draw with a 2 mm lead but I found it too thin. I've also tried 6 mm or 5 mm leads, they're great and they are really big.

the urban sketching icon
if you're interested in where the urban sketching icon came from, have a look at this image. this image is from a trip I took to christchurch New Zealand. I was really taken with the library. It turns out the library is a really fantastic building that has not just books but also shares knowledge and skills. I learned how to create buttons and so I used this image to create a button which I wear on my jacket and I thought it was a great image that we could use as the icon for the Sketching group.

A think time doodle
I love doodling, , working out a detail, This detail is not to scale, just a thought process to work out the joining of a new buildings brickwork to an older building with different sized bricks, and my way of divorcing the coursing between the old and new with a RWP, I like using a little colour. I have used this detail many times with great success, there are several different details to go with it, the ground interface, the eaves and a window and door alternative.
