The Pyramids of Giza: Past and Present. These pyramids were once covered with a smooth, gleaming layer of polished white limestone from the Tura quarries, which reflected the sun's rays with such intensity that they seemed to glow. Their summits were coated with electrum (an alloy of gold and silver) to reflect sunlight even more. Today, after earthquakes, erosion, and human activity over the centuries (especially after the earthquake of 1303 AD), most of the outer casing has disappeared. What we see now is the raw inner structure. Despite this, these pyramids remain one of the most important monuments of a very ancient civilization.
